Better than the sum of its parts
Disclaimer: I backed this on Kickstarter so I'm probably biased towards wanting to enjoy this. So the short version is that I really enjoyed this game. Despite a bit of jank, it had a lot of that small budget charm. The game is not for everyone - you have to be able to handle some rough edges, but if you're that kind of person, or especially if you just love a cyberpunk setting, then I would definitely recommend checking this out. The voice acting was definitely a highlight, and a surprise given the limited budget for this title and just how many voiced lines there are. Everything is voiced except for your main character - who is actually voiced, but only in select cutscenes. No performances were bland, they all felt very appropriate for their character and the setting, and they really helped bring the setting to life. Flavorful voices without being too over-the-top. The art direction also brings a lot to the game, it has great detail in the backgrounds that is so necessary to establish the tone of cyberpunk. I don't want to spoil any of the story, so I'll keep this part general. For people familiar with cyberpunk stories, I can't say there will be anything earth shattering in here, you've probably seen most of the main story elements before, but there might be a few interesting twists to the usual formula. This is probably to be expected for fans of the genre, a lot of cyberpunk stories are just twists or reinterpretations of the same core themes. The other highlight for me was definitely the exploration - the game really rewards those who explore every nook and highrise ledge. Combat is good enough to drive the game forward without being frustrating, but it's not anything special. There are a number of ways to approach combat encounters, and while none of them are fully fleshed out, there is variety given the ability to focus your efforts into one or more of: hand-to-hand, guns, stealth (indirectly), and augmented reality, which adds a nice 2D space/cyber shooter mini-game that lets you hack people to stun them, or disable turrets/cameras. This hacking mini-game is more fleshed out when you hack a terminal rather than augmented reality, and there are quite a few opportunities to hack in the game (hint, worth putting points into hacking). A completionist first time run took me just over 20 hours (I'm usually on the long end of completion times on HLTB, fyi), which was really a perfect length for the game. You could rush through much faster, but you would miss much of what makes the game great. It ended leaving me wanting more, but still satisfied with how things wrapped up. I would definitely see myself giving this a second playthrough in the future.
