Twenty years after the events depicted in the multi-award-winning Deus Ex, the world is just beginning to recover from The Collapse. As an elite agent-in-training, you must match wits against numerous militant factions bent on violently reshaping the world to suit their own agendas. Armed with a multitude of high-tech gadgets and cyberpunk bio-mods, you are granted nearly superhuman powers. Travel the globe to uncover fiendish plots and convoluted conspiracies of world domination. Unmask the conspirators, and discover the shocking truth behind your own origins.

Deus Ex: Invisible War features the open-ended gameplay of its predecessor: use multi-tools and trickery to get past your opponents, or just turn their technology against them as you hack their turrets and computer systems. Along with bio-mods and choices that let you mould your character as you desire, take advantage of the numerous ways to customize your weaponry whether it’s to increase their rate of fire or clip capacity. Last but not least, take advantage of the various factions, such as the Omar who have the only black-market bio-mods, to further your aims.

Who should you trust? Who should you fight? Every decision you make affects the world around you. A good choice for RPG and action fans alike!

  • RPG-ish design allowing for multiple solutions to every quest, whether through stealth and treachery or all guns blazing!
  • A selection of unique biomods such as the Neural Interface that allows you to hack computers or Cloak to hide from enemies, cyberpunk style.
  • Globe-hop to real world locations such as Seattle, London, and Cairo.

IMPORTANT: only play this if you haven't played the first Deus Ex yet.

This game is well known for disappointing fans by having less features than its predecessor. But those who are new to RPG shooters may enjoy being able to use different guns freely, while upgrading your character with different special abilities (more on that later). The environments often consist of a number of different areas or zones which are linked together, and one is free to move between those areas and explores their nooks and crannies: whether they are looking to find a particular apartment and kill someone's pet greasel for a quest, or whether they are looking to find some weapons or other goodies somewhere. The story felt "pretty good," with an interesting twist or two, and there were some memorable characters therein. Once again we have a game with annoyingly short ending videos though, and I don't believe there was any "monitoring your choices" through the game, just final actions. One may love or dislike the androgynous ammo of the game: basically ammo packs of nanomachines which work for any weapon, meaning that every weapon draws on the same ammo pool. I have to admit I actually prefer this system sometimes, as in this case it eliminated some of my tendency to never use a precious rocket-launcher because its ammo was rare. With the addition of biomods which decrease ammo consumption, one can feel less and less conflicted about pulling out their rocket launcher or flamethrower, knowing that the ammo which enemies drop can be used in it all the same :D Combat was fairly enjoyable when one brings different biomods to bear, such as the "biotox drone," a hovering cloud of nanomachines which shoots nonlethal sedative darts at enemies, or the vision enhancement to spot enemies through walls. Personally I love maxing super strength as soon as I can (kill soldiers instantly by hurling dead soldiers at them XD), then you can one-hit foes with the tonfa for a nonfatal kill (police stick). There are of course many abilities to augment one's ability to be stealthy, to explore hazardous areas, and to approach situations in different ways. One can use thermal masking and bot domination to take control of enemy droids and massacre everyone with them, or one can send a small spy drone in to neutralize said bot with an emp blast. There are only three levels for each biomod, and it is fully possible to replace a bio mod you have purchase in one slot with a different one later. This means it is possible to try a different play style later in the game if one is sufficiently talented at getting their hands on biomod canisters through merchants and the nooks and crannies of the environment. This game wants you to explore, though the openness and size of its world cannot hope to compete with our modern idea of sandbox freedom. In many ways, this game is a smaller Deus Ex Human Revolution with respects the environment, the level or RPG-ness, and the impact of the story (though frankly I remember the invisible war characters better than the ones in Human Revolution... which I JUST player O_o). This is a good intro game for first-person shooter fans who are new to RPG elements. As someone who played this game and loved it, I am not sure whether I will buy it while it is on sale, because I will definitely be buying Deus Ex for the first time, which is hailed as having a much deeper RPG stat building experience and perhaps even more content. Still though... I do have enough fun memories attached to Invisible War as my into intro into the Deus Ex world.

Do not spend money on this game.

This game is terrible. The game is designed poorly, it plays terribly, the story is garbage, the characters are bad, the weapons are just lame, the game is terribly balanced, and it's a poorly optimized console port from the original Xbox. The performance is of particular note. You will randomly get MASSIVE drops in frame rate for NO reason. Many entirely random spots have tanked the frame rate below 20, even on minimum settings. This game does look alright for its age (except for animations - they're all terrible), but the maps are TINY. Unreal Engine 2 is better than this, so I can't tell you why it's so bad, but it is. As for the story, any illusions of depth are entirely superficial. There is no real "mystery" here. Which DX ending did IW follow? All of them. How? Because reasons, basically. The plot twists are best summed up as "Oh, yeah, I lied, and now I have a mission for you." The characters are shallow caricatures with no depth or anything. The factions are all terribly bland and really transparent. The villains of the story are probably the best-written, and they just randomly offer to let you join them despite them hating you and trying to kill you the entire game. This game is stupid. As for gameplay, all weapons share the same ammo pool, with some using more and others using less. Not that it matters, since ammo is EVERYWHERE. Enemies have terrible AI, can't shoot worth a damn, and it's ridiculously easy to just kill them outright. Sneaking is clunky and restrictive, but enemies are dumb enough that it's super easy to sneak past anyone and everyone. Movement and physics are clunky and just not fun. The biomods are the only highlight of the game, and even then you have all the ones you'll need by halfway through the game. This game is not worth $2.50, and that's saying something. This game will make you hate games. I slogged through it and I would have been happier if I never did. Avoid like the plague.

Not Compatible with Win10 ...

Purchased and refunded due to incompatibility with my Windows 10. I Tried various options/fixes to no avail. Even the visual mod. Constant crash at start, hang up/freeze, etc. Sure there are probably work-arounds to get it to function, but I don't have the time/desire to fart-knock around trying to get a game to work. Forgettaboutit!

so right but so wrong

First of all: If you get a black screen by starting a new game try this: Deactivate every overlay application (nividia, steam, etc) start it as a administrator. The gameplay is good. It has a few questionable design choices like universal ammo and dumped down roleplaying. However It feels like deus ex. It has the hacking like the original deus ex. The main character talks like JC Denton. It let me solve problems the way I want. I realy want to like it... But: Loading screens completely ruin this game. It takes forever to load a new area. that may not sound too bad until you realize how small the areas are and how often you have to load a new map. It's a real shame, a good game is here but buried under horrible optimisation.

Ultimately unfullfilling

For context: I played DX and DX2 for the first time in 2024, so nostalgia wasn't a factor for me. Coming from the original game which was far from perfect but still supremely playable even today, DX2 felt unpolished, heavily compromised, buggy and oh-so janky by comparison to the point of being unable to take is seriously. Of all the games in the franchise, I had the hardest time immersing myself here. I was left wondering where it went wrong during development since they obviously had all the ingredients for a great sequel: rich lore, memorable characters, a great sequel hook and the Unreal 2 engine. But I just didn't see those puzzle pieces coming together. On a technical level, DX2 felt extremely small and constrained compared to the open levels of DX, leaving little opportunity to sneak around because all environments were so tiny and despite that, there's multiple loading screens for pretty much everything. Hub areas were the worst offender: exit a building (LS), walk across the street into another building: LS. And these were far from instantaneous even on a modern PC which was terrible for my immersion. This isn't a fault of the Unreal 2 engine or the original Xbox since both are more than capable of rendering large open areas. DX2 did bring some noticeable improvements (dynamic lighting, gunplay, alt-fire for guns, futuristic items, augmentation wheel) which I did appreciate, but the environments and story honestly just left me as flat and emotionally detached as Alex Denton’s voice lines. Even life-changing revelations didn’t faze him. Despite a more talented cast, the delivery of most dialogue somehow ended up worst than DX to the point of being utterly distracting. The story also felt convoluted and incoherent. Disappointing conclusion of my DX journey starting with The Fall. If you’re looking for a futuristic DX, I’d wholeheartedly recommend Project Snowblind instead. A much better and refined game.
