Deus Ex™ GOTY Edition

Got DX:GOTY with my Audigy X-Gamer in 2000, played it and it's been on every computer I've had since. There are SO many ways to get things done in Deus Ex and so many ways the player can 'power up' that I can almost guarantee if you play it once and like it--you WILL play it again...and again. The original Deus Ex is on many long-time reviewers' lists of the greatest PC games of all time and it's not surprising. You can play it straight or there are enough cheats to choke a karkian. Exploring the game's interpretation of the middle of this century combined with exploration and just the right mix of action keeps the experience fresh. Players can get even MORE replayability by installing some of the great mods out there such as The Shifter Mod and Clorf's BioMod, both available from ModDB. These take nothing away from the ever-flowing challenge of the game and enhance it to help keep things interesting. Deus Ex, IMO is the Gold Standard of action RPGs. I HIGHLY recommend people purchase it--from GOG of course--and prepare for many, MANY hours of satisfying gameplay.

This is one of those games that I can never put down for long. Sure, a lot of that is probably due to nostalgia...but this game is GOOD! It's because of games like this (and System Shock) that we have Bio Shock and games like it. Still, Deus Ex has a story that is very unique, and that really the constant draw for me. The new game did a decent/good job of recapturing that aspect, and I hope they continue!

I'm normally not the greatest fan of old games (yea I know, what am I doing on GOG?) -- anyway. This is by far the game I've played the most and enjoyed the most. I found new things about the characters and story in my 9th playthrough. There's nothing as a creepy as goofing around in random people's apartments - completely out of the way of the main story and suddently being adressed via an answering machine. There are so many ways of approaching each obstacle in this game and thinking is rewarded. Finally, the game has a wonderful, engaging and well written story. Buy it, you really can't go wrong.

I bought this on ebay (because it is so amazing) long before I discovered GOG.com . I was a huge fan of Thief 1+2 and I love the idea of a first person shooter that revolves around stealth and strategy. The storyline of Deus Ex is every conspiracy theory that ever was rolled into one, set in a futuristic science fiction theme. This game is amazing for a number of reasons for example it is FPS but you also get skill points like experience for completing missions and exploring secrets. These skill points can be spent on combat related skills and other things like lock picking, computer hacking, and medicine to increase the amount of health received for each med kit. Also throughout the game you find bio-modification upgrades so you slowly turn into the bionic man, only cooler. This game received rewards for the voice acting, and I have to say whoever wrote the script for this game may be a genius. Not just the conversations you will have, but the ones you over hear when you go eves dropping. The storyline of the game is just designed to make people think about the world around them which is a rare thing to see someone take so much pride into a video game but we the gamers get to reap the benefits. FYI Deus Ex 2 felt rushed and heavily dumbed down to make it more pleasing to the masses but they dumbed it down too much if you ask me. Still a cool game but it doesn't come close to the greatness of this game. Although whoever did JC's voice in the game was so cheezy, all the other voice acting in Deus Ex was better than any other game that ever existed before 1997, but JC made me roll my eye's so much it started to hurt. I still love this game and regularly play the new mods that are out. The revision mod stands out in my mind... Now go play this game. I mean it, right now.

I've been playing this game since it came out and have completed it at minimum, once every year. This game just keeps calling me back, and I have just as much fun as I did the first time through. The thing that has immortalized this game for me is just how open it is when it comes to how you play the game. Want to run-and-gun it? That's fine. Want to sneak around and avoid confrontation? That's a-okay as well. Want to play through without killing a single person, lock-picking a single door, or hacking an electronic? Completely possible. How you want to navigate the mission and use (or not) your resources is completely up to you; at no point have I ever felt that the game was preventing me from doing something that I believed I should be able to do (within reason of course. Still can't fly.). The visuals are very dated and the game is slow to start but if you can look past that I can almost guarantee this game will climb onto your top 10 favorite games.
