Descent 3 'review'

Unfamiliar with the previous two descent games (but not the genre), I jumped right into this one. It's rather fun in all, and forces one to think in something other than a 2d plane. Challenges/Fights range from easy to hard, with little scope for adjustment, but still, new players should be able to grab the idea fairly quick. Once you know the level, play it again! Mapping it out in your head after a run-thru really helps to avoid some confusion. Getting out of cramped tunnels, and into open spaces as the effect of making the world appear 'larger', but is slightly hampered by the limited range on planetary surfaces. Despite the previous issue, and a few small issues (and what game does not have hem?), I do highly recommend it to anyone looking for something new and beyond a standard 'walk/run' based FPS game.

Ahead of its time

Descent 3 was not perfect by any means, but it was still a triumph in many ways. On a technical level, it stood out from the crowd back in its day. The story elements that made Descent 1 and 2 so good were carried on fairly well. The gameplay got a tad more complex and drawn out, and depending on your preference, this could be counted as bad or good. If there's anything negative to say about D3, it's that all the spit and polish they applied to this classic series made it a little too bright and shiny. The dark tunnels and gripping fear of being hunted by heartless machines was somewhat sacrificed in this installment to make way for shiny industrial backdrops and full motion video clips chock full of cartoony characters. However, is it worth $5.99? A resounding YES. This should be in every gamers classic library.

Tremendous fun!

The Descent series has always a favorite of mine. I love FPS games, and I love the unique spin that this series puts on the genre. The games take elements of both the FPS and space flight sim genres while adding a touch of arcade simplicity. Desecent 3 added a lot to the series. It has mission objectives, fully 3d graphics, voice clips, etc. I love this one because it is brighter and less gritty than the first two. It may seem almost garish, but the colorful graphics are very pleasing to the eye, and for the most part, stand up to today's games. As far as i can see, people still play this game online, so if you want multiplayer you can have that too. Overall, for the price and distribution here at GOG, this is a deal you can't miss out on. The Descent games were ground-breaking when they were first released, and they are still incredibly satisfying today.
