Partly good

I realize that seemingly all of the point-and-click adventure fans lavish praise on this game, and it's not entirely undeserved. It does remind me of some of my favorite classics. I love the art, the writing, characters and music. But there are a few things holding it back for me. First and foremost, the item usage doesn't always make sense. For example, at the beginning you have to catch a toothbrush with a mouse trap. It's funny, sure, and if I saw it on a cartoon it would be fine, but to get some of these things without a walkthrough you basically have to try using everything on everything else. It's really frustrating, and honestly I think I'd have had a better time watching someone else play. The other problem is, while the story is lengthy enough, I don't like it ending on a cliffhanger. Sure, sequels are great, but wrap up each game individually, not just pause a scene and expect that the player has the next installment ready to go.

Is it a good bag game or a bad good one?

Deponia is a really weird one. Lets start with the elephant in the room. His name is Rufus. He's the protagonist. Rufus is an obnoxious little brat with absolutely disgusting sense of humor. He is lazy, spiteful, egocentric and stupid. And you'll spend the whole game looking at him and listening all the terrible things he has to say. Honestly, no idea who and how came up with an idea to make a character like that. Ok, is there something undeniably good about the game? Well, the graphics. It features nice cartoonish style which never gets old on its own. On top of that the game supports high resolutions and locations have a satisfying amount of details. It looks really good. The sound and the score are 50/50. Sometimes it sounds fine, sometimes it's a bit irritating. The main track, variations of which you'll be listening half of the game, is a bit off. It's not bad but it's kinda hip-hopish. I don't mind hip-hop, but I'm not sure it fits the game's world and atmosphere. On the other hand there are tracks that are just brilliant. For instance dusty guitar riffs at the Junk Yard, now that's just something. Feels like a hangover in a desert and is extremely suitable for that location. The puzzles are sort of the same. They're logical for the most part. Not overly moonish. Can be difficult in a good way. But the game is a bit cryptic sometimes regarding what it expects you to do. I enjoyed them except for a couple of locations. What else is there. Beware of an unhealthy amount of sexism and animal cruelty. The jokes are quite cringy in this one. Sometimes I felt like re-watching American Pie - I guess it was kinda funny back when I was 13, but now.. can we pretend I didn't watch it at all?.. Deponia leaves a strange feeling after finishing it. Sometimes it's terrible, sometimes quite decent. It's a 2.5/5 really, but I can't give it 0.5 star, so I'll throw in another 0.5 for that juicy junkyard track. Play it at your own risk and don't expect much.

Attention all adventure fans!

This game is not only very entertaining, engaging and challenging, it is also proof that 2D graphical adventures can be excellent computer games. In the best style of classical adventures from the 90's, such as the fondly remembered LucasFilm Games, LucasArts and Sierra adventures, this one puts us in the shoes of an unexpected hero-to-be, who discovers by mere chance a scheme of gigantic proportions and finds himself in the line of fire. Compromising his personal goals he ends up interfering with this plan, and along the way he meets a plethora of wacky characters, uses a wide range of crazy devices, and visits multiple wild locations. Puzzles come in varied forms and shapes, but they seem to be a little unbalanced. Some are very easy, while others require you to infer everything, including goals, rules and outcomes. I can imagine this might annoy some newcomers to the genre, but I find it an interesting approach to problem-solving. It's a META-puzzle! You first have to solve the puzzle of how the puzzle works :p I recommend this game to anyone interested in story-telling, problem solving and wacky puzzles, characters and locations. The artwork is very elaborate and aesthetically pleasing, and there is lots of humor (especially some dark German style humor!). And for classical adventure fans, this is definitely worth playing.

Harkens to my soul

While Deponia has it's ups and downs it inevitably became one of my favorite adventure games of all time. I understand a lot of oldschool players don't appreciate Daedalic's approach on the genre much, but luckily they'll be left in the past playing their decrepit games over and over. I find it refreshing that Daedalic is taking a genre that was just about lost and making it new again. Telltale is fighting the good fight too, without a doubt, but I find their newer games to be either too traditional to a fault or too streamlined. Deponia itself sets itself apart by it's setting and atmosphere, though it keeps in tune with the kind-of-funny-kind-of-serious attitude we've come to basically expect from every good point and click at this point. It has good system of combining inventory and decently challenging puzzles which will keep veterans thinking as well as being accessible to new comers of the genre. The story line is interesting and unique, though cut short to leave room for the sequel. Characters are generally interesting, if a little static, though I despise the main character Rufus, which is funny considering my high regard for the game. It started with his voice and quickly became his personality. I just got the sequel so hopefully it holds up to this new standard Daedalic has set.

Shiniest gems found in the hardest rocks

The only downside was the fact that only the 3rd install worked completely, and the saved games were not compatible - which is only found out by restarting the whole game from the beginning. After that all worked, including the mini-games. It has a certain atmosphere, which I found to my liking. The puzzles made my mind's abstraction cores to sweat, hard, but eventually figureable. Just enough to keep up my stubbornness on it's toes, but not too hard to give up and look for the hints / walk-thoroughs. A lovable one. Maybe a bit short, but never a dull moment - well written. I hardly can wait the 2nd part to finish the installation...
