A game that brings back the old times

A very nicely looking graphics together with dark music that brings back the feeling of playing when I was much younger (Prince of Persia, Abe, Jazz, Onandonandon;) . As "Mnietek" and "JakobFel" mentioned it feels like Prince of Persia - but with a new touches and graphics. The story is quite obvious, but nice to follow. As many mentioned - the controls are sometimes numb I would say. The Randall guy you are playing as is quite big and slower, so it adds to the game feeling and it was wanted by authors I would say. If you feel like you have to first kill a bunch of zombies before you can continue - don't. They will reappear again and again and ... again. The survivor first. Run if you can! And if you cannot - run! When you think it is mostly running and jumping on the street, you get into the maze of sewers and puzzles become a bit harder, zombies scarcer, but still easy flowing. Didn't get some of the puzzles on the first try with a feeling WTF!? How? Why? Bastards! Again! Give me more of it... Even it is shorter than we are used now - it is feeling good and not old... If more authors do games with player in mind and heart - the world would be a much nicer place. So let's slash some madrfakr zombii and run baby run!

Short, intense, and emotional

Essentially it felt like I was playing The Walking Dead game that I've always wanted. Instead of a point/click/decision making game... *cough*... You get to actually get to try and survive the apocalypse based on your skill as a gamer. -Platform through beautiful, dismal surroundings that show the desolation of the zombie hordes. -Low color intensifies the shadows making the zombie hordes that much creepier. -Intense chase scenes and run-away from the zombie scenarios. -Minimal weapon usage thanks to a stamina bar, so most of your escaping is run and climb or duck and slide. -Minimal puzzles mean most of the game is action packed. I didn't struggle with any of the few puzzles that were presented. Most of it involved timing. Very similar to INSIDE. -Fun emotional story of regret and hope. -Short, intense romp that doesn't overstay it's welcome. The bad? Yes, there are some drawbacks... But I don't feel they take away from the game. Most of my complaints would be based on a lack of interaction with the environment. Other than a few specific areas you can't really do much but explore or run for your life. I feel like adding a few more interactive elements might have increased my enjoyment a bit. Other than that it's great. I didn't run into any bugs as other reviewers have claimed, so I can't speak to that. I used a controller and had a blast the entire time. Smooth, responsive controls throughout. I highly recommend this game to anyone who wants a fun zombie story in a few hours time. (Lots to go back and try to discover, also. Lots of hidden items and Easter eggs which do motivate some replay.)

Platformer that's actually really good

*Pro* - Gorgeous visuals. - Well-balanced difficulty. - Great voice-acting. *Con* - Checkpoints are often poorly placed, and dialogue is repeated every time. - The concept of The Rat's maze is moronic, no one could survive that. - Occasional bugs. - A few times it's unclear how to progress. - Shouting mechanic feels pointless (used 2-3 times). - Sometimes hard to tell if objects are in the foreground or not. - Stupid ending. *Conclusion* Deadlight is one of those rare (PC) platformers with really great production value. While it has a number of minor flaws and i almost gave up on it out of frustration once or twice, it is certainly worth playing - even if you're not a big fan of platformers.

Prince of Persia meets The Walking Dead

Deadlight is an action platformer set in an alternate timeline wherein a zombie apocalypse utterly decimates Earth in the late 80s. It's a short, but memorable adventure chock full of fantastic level design, impeccable atmosphere and just fun overall gameplay. In my review title, I said it's Prince of Persia meets The Walking Dead and really, I can't think of a better way to describe this. While it's a side scrolling platformer more akin to the original Prince of Persia, its gameplay has more in common with the Sands of Time trilogy that most people know the franchise for. As for the Walking Dead aspect, that's not just in terms of the zombies but also in terms of the overall atmosphere. It shares a similar depressive atmosphere to that of Telltale's Walking Dead adventure games. The atmosphere is majorly impacted by fantastic art direction, in particular. This game's art makes such beautiful use of a limited color palette to create a very bleak, but intriguing ambiance. Its overall gameplay is very refined, making it very smooth to traverse the levels and switching to weapons and other maneuvers feels quite intuitive. Furthermore, the storytelling in this game is perfect for a platformer, giving most of the narrative through the environment and the way that Randall interacts with the world; however, there are notes and hints toward other plot points that are quick and easy to read so that you're not spending ages reading text like you do in an RPG. The only real criticism I have is shared with many others here: the game is quite short for its price. To be fair, for what it is, it shouldn't be much longer than it is but still, $12 for a 5-ish hour platformer does feel a bit hefty. Nonetheless, I've gotten this for free twice (once thanks to Humble, the second time thanks to GOG) and thus I have no real reason to complain at a personal level because otherwise, Deadlight is a great platformer that I've thoroughly enjoyed throughout the entire time I've played it.

A piece of art

The game is a legitimate piece of art in visuals and story (and as with all art - your tastes may significantly diverge from my rating). HOWEVER, I'm taking away a full point for the absurd decision that the Alternate Ending is only unlocked through completeing Nightmare Mode - which only saves between chapters (the pain of which you'll recognise while playing through Normal Mode) and more to the point - *recquires you to complete the game in ONE sitting!!!*. Lack of checkpoints during Nightmare may please some "hardcore" gamers, but denying you a save when you need to leave your computer spits in the face of any customer. If you have no life, or if you're not a completionist - feel free to see this as a 5 Star rating. The Alternate Ending is definitely the one better fitting the story, but I would recommend watching it on YouTube (only after you complete Mormal Mode, of course).
