Great Action Adventure Game. Not an RPG.

I have no idea why this was ever marketed as an RPG. This is an action adventure game where 80% of the experience is sitting idly listening to dialogue. The RPG mechanics have been almost completely stripped away with 2.0, not that they were prevalent on launch. Why can't we reset our skills more than once? Why is armor now cosmetic? Why are healing items now on a cooldown in an RPG? Why are grenades on a cooldown in an RPG? Where are the factions with content to play through? Where are the meaningful story decisions that allow players to "role-play"? The few remnants of RPG mechanics left only serve to make this Action Adventure experience cumbersome. All four hours were a chore, and I'm calling it quits now.

Worth it in the end

Liked the game when it launched, even if the consesus was decidedly against it. Now with all the updates and the DLC, I feel vindicated that people are finally able to see the game I saw back then. Beat it about four different times, and yeah, there's not a ton of actual branching or consequence to your choices (though the choices that ARE there are often excellent), but the writing that is there and the story it is trying to tell are very worth experiencing, and the city setting itself is the only video game city I've ever actually believed. It reminds me the most of Vampire: The Masquerade - Bloodlines, which itself didn't have a ton of branching until the finale, much the same as 2077, but the quality of the dialogue and the atmosphere and exploration of the world really brought things to life. There's no equivalent to a Malkavian or Nosferatu run in 2077, unfortunately, but even without that, I think that's the closest equivalent game I can offer. Similarly shit launches, too. The major difference is that VTMB was just there to have a good time, while 2077 actually seems to have something important to say. And speaking to that, I have "beat" the game about four times, but I just can't actually finish it because of the story context for the ending. It's a Cyberpunk game, and as such there is no perfect solution to anything, and I appreciate that in a game's narrative, even if it hurts me lmfao. The themes on offer are not exactly unique but the way the story approaches them, combined with how the world draws you in, have left me gutted every single time I go through the game. Take that for what you will. It's no revolution in player reactivity or gameplay innovation, and there are things that didn't go as far as they could have, but as a world to live in for a hundred hours, and a story being told, I think 2077 is absolutely worth the money and the time. If those are things you care about, you really can't go wrong here.

Beautiful but lukewarm

I'll preface this by saying that I have extreme open world fatigue, or maybe I never really liked the genre in the first place. I do like dystopias, cyberpunk themes, rpgs and shooters. I think that Cyberpunk is beautiful, quite immersive but also middling, slow, and at times super annoying. Every good, gripping dialogue has its annoying and meandering counterpart, every good action packed moment seems to have a "Sinnerman"-mission counterpoint that just pulls you out of it. The 2.0 update felt nice and fresh, and gave the game some new wings, but I just can't find anything here that makes me want to play it more.

2024 review, a kickass sci-fi experience

Finally picked this one up, been waiting to find out how it turned out. Now, years after release, i'd say it turned out well. It's got alot of action, and a whole lot of storytelling, in equal measure. Even if you have gripes, you will go away satisfied in one way or another. The action is really fun once you get the hang of the mechanics and start customizing your character to fit your playstyle. Lot of replayability there, and it all feels really smooth and stylish. The world is immersive to be sure, though not as reactive or next-gen revolutionary as it could be. The main story is definitely a solid 4/5. The cutscenes and voice acting are really really good, though some of the scenes are so long you'll be wondering if you bought a game or an interactive movie. This is most definitely a traditional role-playing experience, heavy with dialogue (with some dialogue choices) where you play as a specific person, destined to do a specific thing. This made the game feel cagey at points, as if there's no point to anything else but to do the main quest. The game does feel very basic in it's setup of how missions and the general gameplay are handled. You have 'main mission' and 'side quests/sub-side quests' mission lines that pop up and are offered up in different flavors. It all feels very familiar and straightforward, and I have had a ton of fun with it so far.
