A flawed adventure
A middling adventure in Night City. Story: V isn't a compelling character. The game glosses over a huge amount of what would have been a great opportunity to develop V as a character. The story picks up in the last half of the game but really struggles to find its footing in the beginning. You'll have a few compelling side-quests and main story quests that have great interaction with NPCs, but the game tosses them away as soon as their portion is done. World: Despite the glowing neon lights of Night City, it is an incredibly dull and lifeless city. NPCs have simple routines of walking up and down streets with little to no interaction with you. Cops spawn into place when you commit crimes, even if you're in the middle of the desert. There is surprisingly little to do. Locked doors everywhere, random events are often the exact same thing in a different location - and feel like exp grind fests rather than anything that contributes to the world at large. Gameplay: It feels more like an FPS with minor RPG elements than an RPG that happens to be an FPS. That being said, gunplay isn't bad. Once you pick up weapons you enjoy it can be quite entertaining. Main quests and side quests often feel like the same thing, different location. There's a lack of variety in how you complete quests and dialog always seems to end up with the same result. Graphics: It looks alright. I wasn't impressed. The game looks good, don't get me wrong. But it feels absolutely lifeless. Character animations are good when they work properly. Character customization is robust, if mostly useless. You rarely see yourself outside of inventory menus and activating mirrors. Sound: The sound design in the game is great. It's one area I really enjoyed. The combat music kicks in just at the right time and aren't overbearing. Voice actors and actresses did a fantastic job and I was quite happy with it.
