Reviewing version 1.5

This game has a lot of problems. There are still a few bugs, but they're minor and didn't cause any problems or really break immersion. The difficulty curve is all over the place (storming Arasaka tower was a breeze but then a random gangbanger killed me in one hit as I passed by). Some of the relationships feel very rushed (you go on one mission with Judy and then you act like you're old friends--and the final mission with her feels very romantic-y even though you aren't in a romantically engaged--it's obvious they did only the minimal writing adjustments for the version where she's not into you). Your dialogue options are often limited and force you to say stupid things or ask stupid questions that your character should know. And so on. However, despite all its many rough edges. I was hooked for the whole 47 hours and 33 minutes that I spent on my first playthrough. This is probably the most "bloodlines" game since VtM:Bloodlines (although that game has better dialogue options). I really found myself sucked in and caring about many of the characters, however perfunctory some of the relationships were. If I leave the game happily filling in the story's blanks with my own headcannon (instead of being annoyed at how unfleshed out things were), that's win for the writing team. Likewise, I really loved driving around the city. It could do with more interaction options with the random NPCs, sure, but it was detailed enough to put me in an immersed state and never be bored. Also, as a minor note, I really loved that the game almost always gave me a choice about drinking alcohol. I've never had any interest in alcohol in the real world, and always find it hard to stay immersed when my characters excitedly partake in game. It's probably something that would only appeal to me, but I really appreciated (almost) always being able to turn down drinks. Anyway, the game has a lot of rough edges, but for whatever reason I loved it. Five stars, would (and will) play again.

a delayed game is eventually good...

so it has been a long time since it was released and today i wanted to see if it would be as great as i hoped it could be... well i got 5 minutes into the game before it crashed... and i have yet to get much further than the car ride back from the start mission... now i am not a super fan of cyberpunk but i still enjoy it (so much prefer space/science, steam and diesel punk to it) and i love the adult parts it offers... if i could get to that it might have become something like the skyrim adult experience but... this game and development really tanks their reputation and deservedly so, corporate really fucked up on this, the devs told them it wasn't ready, the QA probably screamed it every day but ooooooh no, gotta be grabbing the loot early sooooooo... honestly, this could very much become a 5 star game some day, it has the bling bling and juicy setting for it... or at least it seems so to me, fuck if i know as i have yet to get much further than the car ride back from the starter mission...

Disappointing

Even outside of the bugs and problems this game had on release, the world really isn't that fun to explore and the gameplay is mediocre, RPG elements not very deep, characters are unlikeable and forgettable, etc.. The 2020 Gamescom award is what the page is advertising as seal of quality which literally was months before its release and basically like winning best preview at a videogaming convention. Graphics are good, but this is a clear example of how having good graphics can't hold up the rest.

You can feel the duck tape

I am disapointed by the amount of bugs and bizzare way the game unfolds. After the prologue i felt the game just cut some content because Johny just started talking to me like he knew me already, and i started getting calls from fixers i never heard about, not even once, just by driving through their territiory, without any intorductions or anything. I never got the line "wake up samurai". The gameplay itself is good. I enjoyed the gigs from more than anything, its the thing that made most sense for this universe. The main story is just rushed, in my opinion. I dont like any ending, and the one i choose because it was the only sensible option for me, was the worst one. The choice i really wanted was not there, unless you knew about a secret option. That was anoying. I want to like this game, but after finishing it at max level, I was just disappointed. It was fun, but not as fun as it could have been.

Not as immersive as it could be.

Played through twice, once at launch, second a year and a half later, and now I'm playing for the third time upon the release of 2.0 and DLC. Gotta say, the perks tree got a nice overhaul. I can actually understand it now and feel like it actually contributes to the kind of character I want to play. Driving feels a little bit better. Combat feels smoother. They've really been working on this game. But what really gets me is the dialogue and the narrative itself. It just feels awkward a lot of the time and there's no real nuance to your decisions. I want to like this game more than I do, it's why I've played it three times now, but how they handled dialogue and voice acting really ruins immersion for me.
