violent sandbox

[review based on original release, not GOG release] Crusader was the best action series of its time. There's little here in the way of story and character development, but the armed infiltration gameplay is fully fleshed out. The Silencer advances Diablo-style through various industrial and corporate installations toward his mission objectives, which occasionally change along the way. Ultimately, the levels are all very linear, but the player has a multitude of options for dealing with each room. The Silencer's arsenal includes pistols, remote bombs, mines, rifles, auto-shotguns, shield-killing energy weapons, and even a room-clearing multi-rocket launcher, letting the player choose between setting traps, attacking the whole room head-on, or anything in-between. The Silencer is also able to roll in any direction, giving much-needed mobility. At higher difficulties, guards are extremely deadly, so rolling in for an unexpected surprise attack is often the best approach. Guards patrol, sit in ambush, teleport or wander in unannounced. Unarmed technicians stand around, work at their stations, and otherwise go about their routine. When they see the player, they might hold up their hands, call for help, or run for the alarm. The levels are littered with obvious security cameras and gun turrets, hidden electric eyes, concealed touchpads, disguised doors, any of which can turn a simple room into a deathtrap. All of these add to the sense of a living world, and there's never a feeling that a particular trick is overused. It's hard to overemphasize how well the game balances the believable level defenses with the player's freedom to carefully dissect or wantonly demolish them. There are often computer consoles available to shut down or take over fixed defenses and robot guards. Sometimes it's more satisfying to be sneaky; sometimes it's just as fun to blast through a locked door and set all the alarms and traps off. Crusader was one of the first games to play music from a digital file rather than MIDI or a CD track. The soundtrack is full of brilliant techno mixes that add more sense of action than the actual gameplay. One of the best soundtracks in PC gaming. Crusader's sound effects were top-notch too. Two significant flaws still stand out. Crusader uses live action video clips to advance its story. These are unusually hammy and often too long, especially since they are all monologues (the Silencer stays true to his name). Video quality is good for its time, and there's a certain campy charm, but the videos are often annoying. The other flaw is the Ultima 8 engine powering the game. Rather than smooth Diablo-style scrolling, backgrounds jump from camera to camera, and the Silencer animation does some odd skipping as he runs against walls. Mouse and even joystick control were available in the original release, but I always found them too imprecise compared to keyboard-only. There are also some difficult jumping challenges due to the misleading perspective and fixed jumping distance. In general, jumping is only a major obstacle when exploring for secrets (which are everywhere), but it's still a weakness of the engine. Crusader would be phenomenal with a modern 3rd-person engine like God of War's. In short: lots of shooting, lots of sneaking, lots of sneaky deathtraps, lots of explosions, and great music the whole time.

Love this game, LOVE IT

I've been waiting for this game to be released on GOG.com since GOG got started. Crusader has always been a hidden gem, and is my all time favorite DOS-only release title. It's a top down action game in which you play a super-soldier turned renegade out for revenge against the company that betrayed you. The game gives you everything you could want in an over-the-top shooter: pricelessly overacted FMV cutscences, gratuitous violence, a wide array of fun and effective weapons, and of course a destructible environment. Crusader shows how fun it is to be the anti-hero. The Silencer is a remorseless killer who massacres anyone in his way. You get the feeling throughout the game that he supports the Resistance not out of a sense of loyalty but only because their goals are tangential to his, murdering the people who betrayed him. Firing a rocket and watching your victims staggering around, engulfed in flames is utterly satisfying, and the fast paced missions give you the impression that you're doing very real damage to your corporate foes. Seriously, get this game. It's well worth your time.

A nearly forgotten diamond

This Game was pure fun to play. A combination of action and small puzzle, combined with great grapfics (at its time). But somehow, man people oversaw it in the 90s. Great that it found it's way to GOG!

A deservedly well-beloved classic

I got this when it first came out and was amazed. The box was full of extras in the player's "kit" that provided background, each well-written and colorful. GOG's version has none of them, but I hope we get some over time. They were some of the very best I've seen. But the gameplay's the thing. And wow did it rock! You've got one of the coolest looking avatars of all time, and wow can he move! Hardly any games let you drop to your knees to fire, and rolling around to move about and dodge was unique. Some hated its unfamiliarity, but none of Crusader's commands or movements are tough after just a little practice. And they add some welcome diversity. Speaking of diversity, you are one heck of a killer. Essentially a special forces soldier, you have access to ridiculously fun weaponry with which you can snipe, shotgun, blow up, burn, and shock both the innocent and guilty alike. In fact, you must make the decision whether to spare civilians or let them flip the alarm and call down hell upon you. Innocent bystander or deserving of being set on fire to run screaming hilariously -- I mean horribly -- to his death? The game's background and story were well-developed enough to make you wonder. Additionally, you can both fight some pretty scary and efficient robots and turn the tables right back on them, remote controlling guard stations and mechs, which is such tremendous fun you'll truly hate to see them evenntually die. The soundtrack really helped bring out how evocative the gameworld was. I still remember, decades later, the plaintive guitar music as the Crusader comes back one day to devastation on the home front. Wonderfully moody. The action music is full of energy without getting annoying; many remember it all these years later. And the impact of grenades and shots were fantastic. The graphics for their day were superb, and still have a lot of punch and character. Explosions were the best of their day, with beautiful flame effects. The environment was a joy to look at and sneak through, and its destructibility was fantastic, making the gameworld feel alive. Blow open a wall and a nearby chair will spin about ... while behind its ragged hole may be a secret cache of ammo! Be on the lookout ... and there are guides/spoilers on the net. There are full motion video bits that advance the story along, and some like them better than others. I liked a lot of them, and the actresses were very attractive, so no complaints there. Overall, I just want to say how beautiful, extraordinary, and alive these graphics were for their day, how great the sound effects and music were, how generous and wonderfully developed the background materials were, and how exciting the gameplay. Everything was amazingly top-notch. This and X-COM: UFO Defense were the two games I joined GOG hoping most to find or come around one day. I know I'm among the many people thrilled to find Crusader legally playable in a GOG-tuned edition. Finding Crusader again is an absolutely huge treat for those in the know, and it's sure to garner many more fans now. It remains one of my favorite games of all time and on many levels. Well worth your hard-earned (paltry few) dollars!

Only (?) for old fans

Like other reviewers here I found that the horrid controls in combination with my lack of nostalgia for this game (I only learned about its existence when the good folks at GOG released it) meant I just could not get into the game. There were good parts, certainly. The interactivity looked very promising from what I saw of the first level. But the controls are just horrible. Mouse controls are basically nonfunctional - people bitch about Dark Souls' mouse controls, but THIS game has bad mouse controls. I'm not sure if a gamepad would work with the game as I don't own one, but even the numpad controls, which were the closest to passable, were too frustrating to me. The worst aspect of the controls is that the aiming is sooooo slow and imprecise. It feels more like luck than anything else when I finally hit anything. Even if you try to line up around a corner and roll around to surprise the enemy and shoot them I often had to reload to line it up juuuust right (the isometric perspective makes it EXTREMELY hard to be sure before actually trying). In my eyes this is definitely only worth it for old fans.
