GOREY STORY
Unequivocally a love-doodle to the exquisite work of master monster maker Edward Gorey. Wordlessly the game takes you through mysterious woods filled with all manner of evocative monstrosities in search of your abducted brother. Just as the drawings are very simplified versions of Gorey's masterpieces of surrealist ink crosshatching and watercolors, the gameplay is a greatly simplified version of a point-and-click puzzle game. And the emphasis is deeply on the word "puzzle", because it is all clicking and virtually no pointing during the whole experience. In fact you don't even use your mouse. You walk, you jump, you interact when allowed. Most of what you do in each chapter is walk to find interactive spots, click to use them, and then try to figure out what is the right sequence of actions to take next time that won't get you killed again. Although the game includes some puzzling answers to answerable puzzles, most solutions can be understood right away and implemented with good timing. But know this, your best tools in getting to the extremely nearby end will not be logic and insight but trial, error, and a system of very kind checkpoints. Creepy Tale is a nice and simple adventure that sets you on a journey to explore mood more than a place that can be recommended only after one understands it is rather like the ethereal forest inhabitans you can spot hidding in the background: It is fleeting, intriguing, and also a bit insubstantial.
