When difficulty translates to fun

Should you buy this? Here is a quick test: --I like a challenge and don't give up easily. --I prefer to think before I act. --I enjoy defeating Nazis. If you can agree with all three statements, then buy the game. Players control the action from an isometric view and will need to juggle many characters at once. It's not a fast-paced game, thought, so that isn't the challenge. What is difficult is learning the patrol routes and knowing the right man for the job. The task is typically demolition of a certain object and even 12 years later the explosions are satisfying. You'll use lethal and non-lethal takedowns on enemies, but be careful where you leave the bodies! Some missions give no room for error with the alarm (being spotted by enemies) causing instant failure. It's difficult, sure. But the reward of seeing a "Mission Complete" screen is all the more satisfying. There might still be a demo around if you need to try it out, but I'm sure you'll like it if this resonates with you.

Instant classic.

Used to see my father play this all day long, so had to buy it 25 years later to remember those days! For those who see error with direct x5, change the exe name from comandos to Commandos.exe and you're good to go!

one of my all time favorite games

I hate strategy games, Yet i love this game with all of my heart. Basically you control up to 5 commandos who you lead in harrowing attempts to bring down the third reich. Missions usually include sneaking into a heavily guarded area, sabotaging something, then leaving with as little scuffle as possible. This is easier said than done as you will have to study enemy movement patterns meticulously and save crawl down to the very second. However one thing the game doesn't do is bog you down with macromanagement challenges like most strategy games, so you are able to focus all your attention usually on one or two commandos, trust me, you will need it. Despite the high difficulty this game is extremely fun, so if you are up to the challenge, i could not recommend this game enough.

Won't start

I love this series and was excited to get it, but it won't start returning a DIRECT X failure. Ran through the support steps and still having the issue. Eventually gave up . The game itself is amazing, and definitely worth your time

Great, not excellent like the second one

Overall, I would definitely recommend the second game over this one. But with that said, there's still a lot to love here. Unlike many real time strategy games, this does not have any base building, nor do you train or build individual units. If the people you're in charge of die you lose the level rather than being able to simply replace them. You can essentially think of this game as an entire game made up of those Red Alert 1 and StarCraft 1 levels where you are inside of a building with a set team but with more focus on stealth. Each Commando has their own special abilities and tools there are certain weapons they can use that none of the others can, and in order to complete the game you have to master all of them. There's a good variety to the different ones no two feel like they're just the same. There's a lot of levels albeit certain of the early ones are fairly small almost serving to familiarize the player with certain Commandos. Over the course of them there are a bunch of different objectives including blowing up important German installations. It's very easy to pick up and play. The stealth is fantastic. Basically you have to hide from the line of sight of enemies. You can view the cone of the line of sight of any one enemy at a time. You wait for them to turn to look in another direction, maybe walk/patrol to somewhere else, then you get close, take them out silently, hide the body, rinse and repeat until you're able to complete the main objectives. The expansion pack is incredibly challenging. Others have pointed out that at times it is deeply unfair, tricking the player into wasting a resource early in one level that they'll need at the end, when really you could have just been given that resource shortly before needing it, or at the very least not have a setup that makes it appear that you should be using the resource early on. However, success is incredibly satisfying. I've replayed the expansion pack more times than the original, rare for me
