Old memory still fresh to me!

I've played this game when I was 10 years old. Actually in early 2000s China, it's easy to get an unauthorized game copy on market but many of them didn't have localization language pack(Because they've never imported offically to CN mainland). I noticed this game on a student computer mangazine and bought an unauthorized copy from market , I was addicted by its graphic and system, especially it's armor system. I've played this game for long time with a low-level graphical cards in that time, the fps was low but I played it very happily. For the game, if you ever played S.W.I.N.E, you'll be familiar for all the system, Codename:Panzer remove the oil supply system so you don't need to care your tanks will stop by the lack of oil. But the path-finding AI is really poor, especially when you control a lot of tanks, you have to control them one by one to make them point to the same direction or follow the same path. Almost near 20 years from that time, I found this game again on GOG and it runs well on WIN10! All the old memory are bought back to my brain, I found a pure happy that I haven't feel for recently years game experence. Thanks for let us have an opportunity to keep old games!

Company of Heroes' estranged dad

+ nice graphics that holds up even today + decent squad-based gameplay + good mission design + good improvements over S.W.I.N.E. - sometimes wonky controls - some sound and gameplay bugs - some units are wastly superior (sniper, mobile artillery) Stormregion shifted toward a more serious WW2 RTS with a combined-arms approach with artillery (towed and self-propelled), numerous support powers and most importantly, infantry. This all comes together in a rock-paper-scissor formulae. You must have a mixture of all three to work your way through maps. C:PPO is a squad-based game without base building, the units gather XP and the surviving ones advance through missions. You also get a certain amount of Prestige that you may spend on new units or wargears. Unlike S.W.I.N.E you cannot buy units mid-mission, making your starting force a very finite and valuable resource. Fortunately there's repair/heal for your units but they'll die in no-time if you're careless. Tanks and artillery can also run out of ammo. Beside the normal mission objectives sometimes there are hidden objectives too, rewarding you with additional prestige. The mission design is overall great and the game does not give victory easily. Props for including historically accurate ones too like Operation: Mercury, Market Garden or the Battle of Arres. There are some flaws of course. Some bugs (e.g. you can break the tutorial mission) but nothing that would seriously damage the enjoyment of the game. The enemy AI is pretty dumb most of the time, every general in the campaign speaks with English unit quotes and the cutscenes are sometimes downright ridiculous. Window border for double clicking units seems to be a bit off: even if you'd think that all of your units are in the frame, some don't get assigned. Also, some units are just way better than other choices. Apart of that this game is a great choice for WW2 RTS lovers and is wholeheartedly recommended.

Decent RTS

Coming from Sudden Strike and Blitzkrieg, Codename Panzers was a big revelation for me at the time; by now it's still decent even if I prefer Men of War

Decidedly tactical

The AI of this game is pretty bad, and I hate micromanagement, but I still had a good time. What allowed me to enjoy the game was how carefully the game made me invest in my army and gave me control over my units. You get points for completing objectives that you can use to requisition units for your army between missions. That's common. However, unlike many games with this mechanic, what actually persist in your army are the soldiers. Most self propelled vehicles, including tanks, come with a crew. It's the crew, not the vehicle, that gains experience. If a vehicle blows up, the crew exits. If you manage to save that crew, you can give them a new vehicle later at a lower cost (because you are not requisitioning a crew) and they bring their experience to the new vehicle. In fact, if you change vehicles mid mission, as you can freely do, you can potentially get a deadlier unit with the same experience. Towed guns can be operated by any infantry. Between missions, you can freely switch vehicles and customize your army without any point penalty. Infantry get upgrades like different grenades or binoculars or even a boat, and those can also be freely switched between missions. This uncommon army mechanic made my army feel valuable yet flexible. So I didn't mind the micromanagement so much. To further strengthen the micromanagement, the game gives a lot of freedom to control your units in battle. Infantry has three stances with different characteristics. All units can be set to active or passive combat. There is a dedicated reverse move button. In fact, if you try to move a vehicle backward even a short distance without explicitly order reverse move, your vehicle will turn around, move to the new location, then turn around again. Pause is just a spacebar press away whenever you need it. I used it a lot. Codename Panzers feels like a compromise between CoH and Men of War. It's not as complicated as MoH but still has enough complexity and persistence to be addictive.
