A game I could have passed on...

First off, I'm going to make it clear this is about the game's single player; apparently some people love its multiplayer, and if you want to hear about that you won't here. Moving along. I recently picked Chaser off of Steam a few weeks ago. It's clearly a budget shooter, and I thought it'd be a nice cheap fix for someone looking for a new game to play. And I'd heard it was a long game, all the better, right? Not....exactly. The game is extremely bland. There are bad guys with guns: some wear fancy red armor, others black trenchcoats or suits, some gang members, some Russians, but they're all the same enemy. Every single one will behave the same. And what is this "behavior"? The game commits a cardinal sin of blatantly spawning enemies immediately around corners, or in that room you just cleared, or basically anywhere you are. Don't be surprised when you see enemies frequently pop into existence hugging a corner; it's the game's style to "surprise" you in such a fashion. What about the mechanics? Well, there's nothing too special here; again, the common theme is blaaaand. You run and shoot, nothing special but nothing to complain about...except that the game is very bad about giving you feedback. You'll barely be aware that you're being shot at, other than the ridiculous speed with which health and armor erode. There is very little indication you're under attack, and the sounds associated with firefights are somewhere between muted/lackluster and nonexistent. Gameplay frequently consists of hunting for enemies that are persistently peppering you with fire from rooftops, hills, balconies, and rooms you just walked through. If you aren't a fan of regenerating health mechanisms, rejoice! For you won't find any of that here. However, this game leans towards being a good example of why developers have moved towards such mechanics, because as I said before, your health/armor wear away quickly in the smallest encounters, enemies are almost always present due to the game's dedication to using you as a bad-guy respawn point, and the game itself lets you get shot at without raising much of a fuss. I certainly didn't want regenerating health, but this game swerves too far into save/reload territory for my tastes. If you've read this far, allow me to do you one favor: there's a gameplay mechanic that is not touched on in the in-game tutorial, and it is incredibly useful. You can slow down time! Of course, you slow down a ton, too, so its usefulness is mixed, but it will help you deal with those hairier moments more easily. Search your control configuration to find it. Finally, there is the setting and story. They are, regrettably, bland. There's some vaguely interesting stuff about some much-flashed-back-to attack on your person, but it's all drowned out in how unforgivingly the game drags you through the smallest minutia of your journey. Most levels are less about moving anything forward, and more about just continuing whatever leg of the journey you have to make, only now with slightly different surroundings. One of the lower points of the game is exactly this, when you've just helped some guys navigate some enemy check points, and then you make a rather boring "thrilling" escape via jetpack into water, at which point you are forced into some kind of half-assed submarine simulation fighting large numbers of drones while navigating a maze-of-a-shipwreck where everything is tinted the same color. Apparently this was your plan, and rather than just letting us join back up with our allies, or go through some more interesting escape, you trudge through this. Or you go through the fifth chunk of Russian mountains. Or another industrial wreck of a city. Ad infinitum. In short, yes, the game is long, and yes, it is a shooter. But it makes neither of those concepts a joy to behold. Or even that enjoyable. There are far, far better games on GOG that aren't this awful game.

If you like HUGE massive levels...

I love this game... but I have to admit that I agree with some of the unflattering comments about Chaser, especially this many years after its release. First of all, the combat is HARD, or perhaps I should say "unfair". Every 10 minutes or so a corridor will lead into a big room with an enemy ambush chock full of dead-eyed sharp shooters who can see you through chainlink fences or wiremesh overhead walkways before you see them. You will die a LOT in this game. Save after every kill, because even with 100% armor and 100% health it often only takes about 3 well-placed shots and you are an ex-Chaser. Thankfully the game has a BLINDING FAST quicksave/quickload feature, especially on today's hardware. And make copious use of the "Adrenaline mode" to s-l-o-w d-o-w-n the enemy while you aim and shoot at normal speeds. MaxPayneLike. Graphics... are functional. The levels are full of machinery and plumbing and walkways and platforms. Lots of "stuff", but it's not got much in the Texture Department. Characters are kinda blocky, and wheels on vehicles are probably octagons with painted-on hubcaps, but if you spend much time counting the polygons... you're ex-Chaser material. Architecture... is awesome. Every level is an absolutely massive "complex" of some kind. Warehouses, or harbors, or lighthouses, or train tunnels, etc. This isn't DOOM, so there are no hidden doorways in the walls with monsters that have been hiding in a hole since 2004 waiting for you to happen by. These are all "real" buildings with functional rooms and floors and with lots of equipment and props that make it all very believable. They just happen to be populated with lots of enemies waiting for you to walk into their scopesight. I would go farther and say that the layout of the levels is what "makes this game" for me. I'm obviously not a fan of dying, and the combat is trying at times. But when levels are this massive and believable, it is just My Idea of Fun(tm) to explore it all and figure out how to navigate my way through! And to make it even more challenging... there is NO AUTOMAP. In fact, no map of any kind. You have to use your wits and sense of "situational awareness" to figure out where you need to go and how to get there. For example, in the lighthouse level, you start on the beach and have to figure out how to get inside the top of the lighthouse. You will shoot your way through a dock location, work your way into a sewer system, and eventually find a ventilation shaft that will lead at a 45-degree angle for a LONG WAY UP, and you think to yourself "I'll be at the top when I get out!", but no! You're only about halfway up, and you fight your way through a series of security corridors until you eventually wind up in a huge spiral rampway that is obviously going to lead you up to the top! But when you get there are the doors open? Noo! You have to throw a switch, and run allll the way back down the rampway to the BOTTOM of the lighthouse, and... well I don't want to spoil the rest of it. Most levels are like this. Many faceted "puzzles" in huge facilities that are chockful of enemy sharpshooters. If that's your idea of fun, you'll like this game too. As someone mentioned the plot is loosely similar to the movie Total Recall, and you will end up on Mars. That's where the levels REALLY get mind-blowingly huge! So yeah, it's not perfect. But it's a lot of fun. There are a variety of different mission types to keep you entertained. And remember where you bought it... good OLD games!

A Good Game. Not An Exceptional One.

Chaser certainly has its moments. Near the beginning of the game you see debris flying overhead from the space station you just escaped from impact into the buildings of the city your escape pod crashed into. This is merely the first among a number of set pieces dotted throughout this lengthy game. But it must be said that for all the wheat in Chaser there is much more chaff. You can't really escape the game's failings as they're thrust upon you throughout the course of the game. Showering the ground with debris might seem like nice attention to detail until you realise that you frequently have to jump to be able to move over the uneven terrain. Even that doesn't help sometimes and you just get stuck. To use ladders your character (more or less) sticks to them and uses either their feet or their forehead to ascend and descend respectively. You then have to hope that you're going to reach your destination and not plummet to your death. Apparently hands aren't required. Which is a shame as I am under the impression that these useful limbs would have saved me a few quick loads. In short, had the game been cut down to the better, more purposeful levels and the time saved been spent on polish then it could have been a very good game. As it stands it's not a game that has stood the test of time very well at all. But it's still a good slice of old school FPS action.

Great game

It takes a bit of time to like this game, however over the years I finished it several times. The story is long and epic and there are different endings possible. It can be (annoyingly) challenging at times, but that is where the bullet time feature helps out. It's called "adrenaline mode" and it took me about half way through the game the first time before finding out about this feature. As usual it slows everything down, giving you time to aim carefully without taking too much damage. The levels are quite diverse (under water, snow, space, etc). So even though some of the fights may get a little repetitive the diversity of the levels makes up for it. Also the music helps set the mood a lot. Overall definitely worth the money!

What it could be

I have a lot of pleasant memories of playing Chaser when it was released. But memories tend to make everything better (or worse) than it actually is, right? And knowing this i tried to remember bad things about the game. And i certainly did, because there are quite a lot of them. But let's start with the good things. First of all, the story and the presentation in the game were a blast in 2003 and might still look very cool today. The game has very cool moments here and there throughout the entire game. It was the first (as far as i remember) FPS with the "bullet time" ability. The design is very stylish. The music is great. And the gameplay itself is rather solid. Thing is, cool moments are constant but rare. Solid gameplay is good when the game is shorter than this one is. And bullet time is good when it doesn't take an eternity to regenerate. In 2003 it was good. Rather bland, at times boring, but a good take on the "Total Recall" theme. Now i think it will fell much more boring and certainly dated. Still rather good, and might be worth 6$. But only for a person who can like it despite it's obvious flaws. 4 for a patient person, who can deal with the dated game design. If you don't, that's a harder choice for you. But look out for it when it goes on sale anyway.
