CARRION

CARRION, despite its short length and sometimes confusing navigation, is a pretty neat indie title. The way the "Spaghetti Monster" moves is satisfying, as are its abilities you use to complete objectives and unlock the next area. The aesthetic and artwork is amazing, as well as the soundtrack, done by Cris Velasco (you might know him as one of the Mass Effect 2 composers). CARRION is also light on system requirements and runs fantastically on my laptop, so it'll probably run well on anything that can support the minimum system requirements. It also doesn't take up much space, akin to any old sidescroller/platformer from the 90s. As for any criticism, I think a map system would have made navigation and the necessary backtracking a little less confusing, but there are walkthroughs and fan-made stuff online to help. Additionally, being able to pan the camera further than the monster would have helped as well, considering you sometimes have to edge closer to enemies than you want to in order to see a switch or something on the far side of the room. And as for notes and my final thoughts on CARRION, it's worth noting that the offline installer includes 2 DLL files for GOG Galaxy that can cause trouble if Galaxy isn't installed, but they can be safely deleted. The GOG forum for CARRION has a post that mentions this, so look for that. As well, don't be afraid to consult a guide if you get confused, there isn't much lore to spoil and you'll have less of a headache if you do. Anyway, CARRION is a fantastic game if you want something short and retro/indie, or something easy to run. Something you can play to break the monotony of long, drawn-out modern games, whether you're doing so casually or streaming it for other people. You'd be surprised how fun it is playing as a man-eating spaghetti monster.

Es ist durchaus befriedigend einmal das Monster zu sein, einmal menschliche Wissenschaftler mit seinen Tentakeln zu greifen und zu Pixelbrei zu verarbeiten. Die Steuerung ist etwas schwammig, aber das ist bei einer solchen Ansammlung von Mäulern und Tentakeln auch schwerlich anders umzusetzen. Dennoch fühlt es sich "richtig" an. Prinzipiell handelt es sich hier um ein Rätselspiel. Auch wenn man den Menschen prinzipiell überlegen ist sollte man dennoch unerkannt bleiben, denn deren Waffen können einem dann doch ordentlcih schaden. Also schleicht man durch Schächte und Kanäle, setzt dabei seine immer weiter zunehmenden Fähigkeiten ein und überwindet somit Hürden und besiegt Gegner. Dabei gibt es Metroidvaniaartige Elemente, insebesondere, dass man oft an einer Stelle erstmal nicht weiter kommt bis man dann neue Fähigkeiten erlernt hat. An der Stelle setzt auch mein einziger Kritikpunkt etwas an. Ich habe mich zu oft verzettelt und wusste nicht, wo es jetzt weiter geht. Das verwirrende Leveldesign tat sein Übriges dazu. Bis zum Schluss habe ich den Aufbau der Forschungsstation nicht wirklich verstanden. So habe ich viel Zeit damit verschwendet hin und her durch längst leer geräumte Levels zu kriechen anstatt mich den eigentlichen Aufgaben zu stellen. Ein paar Stellen waren auch etwas unfair und mehr durch Glück als durch Können zu bewältigen, im Großen und Ganzen ist das Spiel aber fair und bereitet Laune. Abgesehen von den erwähnten vereinzelten Stellen ist der Schwierigkeitsgrad im guten Mittelfeld angesiedelt. Ab und an benötigt man mehr als einen Versuch, aber das ist auch in Ordnung. Die Story ist gut und wird auch auf nette Art erzählt. Alles in Allem definitiv ein netter Rätsel-Platformer der etwas anderen Art. Allein schon wegen der Vorzeichenumkehr bei der man als Monster spielt ist es eigentlich schon eine Kaufempfehlung, zumindest für all diejenigen, die Pixel-Art mögen und ein Faible für abgefahrene Spiele hat.

Honestly, I get why people don't like the navigation in this game. I find it confusing, and I love mazes in old FPS. That said, it does help with the feeling of being an alien mess of flesh, just going with the flow not understanding where you are going. Makes for an annoying completionist rerun, but that really isn't the vibe of this game, and it's not annoying enough to ruin the amazing fun I had in the first run. Genuinely, one of the best games I've ever played.

The experience of lurking and breaching your way out of the facility abides by the Metroidvania design conventions with a heavy emphasis on backtracking to reach the next level. One of the most effective ways to deal with armed personnel in ambushing, which ties into the predator's mindset. Both the biomass and the NPCs compete over control of their environment, keeping tensions high while entertaining the reverse horror fantasy.
