I'm not much of a shooter person myself, however this game struck a nerve.
- Though the story is quite linear, narration is great and witty.
- Gameplay is fairly easy, even for someone not used to shooters, but if you're looking for a challenge,
try out the true west mode to really feel like a gunslinger - without crosshair and ammunition display.
- Graphics might be a tiny bit outdated for todays standart, but I absolutely love the semi comicy style, it
gives the whole game a bit more grit
I can't really find anything bad about this game, so if you like the western theme and are looking for something to play in between heavy time-sinking games, just give this one a go!
- The cel-shaded artstyle of this game immediately made me think of “Borderlands”. It’s what keeps “Gunslinger” from looking dated, even after all these years.
- The gameplay is linear, there’s only ever one path to take. Luckily, the gunplay makes up for it, being fast and energetic. I can’t explain it in words but it feels so satisfying to shooting bandits. There’s also bullet time (a slow-motion button).
- While the story campaign is a bit short (6-8 hours), there’s never a dull moment. If you’ve never played another Call of Juarez game before, don’t worry, Gunslinger doesn’t require previous knowledge of the series.
- Finally, I highly recommend using these TWEAKS. Go to “%LOCALAPPDATA%\techland\cojgunslinger\out\Settings\Video.scr” and open the file with Word or Notepad.
1. Change your FOV (Field Of View): Add the following line at the end of the file, then replace YourFieldOfView with a value between 80 and 110 degrees (the default FOV is 82.72).
ForcedHorzFov(YourFieldOfView)
2. Disable the BLACK BORDERS at the edge of your screen: Add the following line at the end of the file.

I'm an old-school shooter fan so I wasn't sure if this era of shooter would be good. I was pleasantly surprised and had a LOT of fun with it. Enough to warrant playing New Game + for once.
The Good:
Gorgeous. The game is just gorgeous.
No bullet sponges (other then bosses).
The Narrative and how it integrates into the level design. This I think is the best part of the game. Old school FPSes had platforms and doors popping out of nowhere and we just all accepted the overly gamey aspects as par for the course. This game uses the narrative (and other character attributes) to explain away these things so you never get pulled out of immersion. Really brilliant.
The So-So:
A little short. It took me 6 hours to play through the first time. However, at current prices it's WELL worth the money. For instance, Singularity took around the same amount of time and cost quite a bit more when not on sale.
Regenerative health. Honestly, I didn't mind this game design choice here at all. It fits really well with the overall experience, but some people truly hate regen health so I thought I'd mention it.
Quick-time events. Again, the way they're done it's actually a good design choice for the experience, but some people truly hate them, even when done right (which they are here).
The Bad:
So this one is a bit controversial, but I thought the actual Quick-draw Duels sucked. It's unfortunate, because this is actually such a core part of the game that they even made a second mode of just Duels.
During the campaign you only have a half dozen or so of these so it isn't enough to detract from that experience, but they are the places where I kept dying.
I just didn't enjoy them, but others may.
TL;DR - Buy it. You won't regret doing so.
After two forgettable Call of Juarez games, Gunslinger arrives as a sudden and surprising change. The story framing of an old outlaw and gunfighter retelling his tales with varying degrees in truth helps propel the narrative and provides some excellent meta moments towards the end with its great voice-over. The presentation is similarly exaggerated with intense cel-shaded design and over-designed villains and locations, the latter which allow for a lot of replayability. Sound effects make gunfights a cacophony with bullets zipping past and tearing up things. The gunplay itself takes a bit to get used to since it involves mostly single-action weapons with slow reload times but it does become second-nature, helped by an upgrade system that rewards you for accurate shooting. The only real complaints in the game come down to a few boring maps, an absurd amount of Gatling guns, but mostly the absolutely broken ‘draw’ mechanic required by all bosses. Fortunately, these are minor blemishes on a good looking and rip-roaring story that’s fun to blast through.
Now this game runs extremley well on lower spec PC's! It is the best COJ to date! I ran through an arcade mode gunning down the evil cowboys left, right and centre without any lag at all! Graphics are great, storyline is great and the playability is excellent!
