Cinematic but dated in gameplay

There's a lot to like about this game. It pays a lot of attention on mood, story, and the townsfolk of the cursed town Illsmouth. The main character, a photographer by the name of Parker, arrives in the town wanting to photograph a comet due to arrive in three days. From this, you come to realise that there is some kind of cult that is connected to the phenomena. You unravel the mystery of Illsmouth through interacting and combining objects, as well as talking to the somewhat odd locals. The great things about the game are immediately apparent when you play it. The story and how the mystery is unraveled is done very effectively. The depiction of the town and its people gives the impression that they are living and breathing in the environments. You often see characters walking past in the background, or some, perhaps, are casually spy on you... there is a sense of paranoia that is felt as you come to know the locals. The story and the representation of Cthulhu is atmospheric and often bombastic. You get to explore the forest, the town of Illsmouth, graveyards and crypts during the night. Visually it is strikingly portrayed, and you find that you'll want to keep playing in order to find out more about the occult and demons and whatnot. I would say that for a Dos game, it is a very aesthetic game. Problem arises through the dated gameplay. The interface and the ingame system is quite fiddly and sometimes glitchy. Instances where you can be trying to analyse an object in order to progress the game, but it doesn't register. Then there's the fact that the puzzles don't seem to have any logic to them... the solutions are actually very bizarre. I had to rely on a walkthrough to complete the game, and I suspect this might be a common thing. If you find you're more resistant to dated gaming systems and mechanics, then this could be for you. Underneath the awkward controls, there's a lot of cinematics and artistry here which I found enjoyable.

Of it's time

I like the storyline ( yeah!), I like the dialogue( yeah!), I like the retro graphics ( yeah!), I really can't stand the music and the user interface left me with a sense of impatience and frustration that to be honest ruined the game for me. If you are a Cthulhu nut give it a go, if you're a p n' c nut and want to see something historic give it a go. But again to be honest the free copy of flight of the amazon is way better. Pity I do love reading Lovecraft and I was really looking forward to this.

Even for £1.19 on sale this was too much

I can’t believe this was a game put on shelves that passed any kind of quality checks. I like the atmosphere, even the over-the-top voice acting. That’s where the praise ends however. The interface and control scheme are awful, you can easily miss vital things and get your character stuck (both physically and in terms of the story). There is a heavy, actually exclusive, reliance on ‘trigger events’ (where certain things won’t work or appear before a particular unrelated thing has happened elsewhere). You may think you’ve searched somewhere, tried an item, talked to someone… but no, the game wasn’t ready yet. So you’ll spend an hour aimlessly wandering around, thinking you must be stupid, only to resort to a walkthrough and find out some arbitrary thing you need to do before an item magically appears in that box you already looked at. It degenerates into repetitive guess work, and that isn’t my idea of fun. There are a couple of things that I can’t imagine anyone could discover without a walkthrough: -Having to be close to an innocuous background item that the character hasn’t acknowledged at all previously and would have no reason to examine, while holding a certain item that it can combine with…and only after a certain event has happened. -Getting killed in a particular scene, but if you stand slightly to the right your character has the opportunity to escape, absolutely no logical reason why this is the case and no indication that you have to suddenly use the keyboard keys to move your character when you’ve been using the mouse up until then. -You’re told to speak to a guy for help (you spend the first third of the game looking for him), he agrees and you go with him…and die. No explanation at all. But if you don’t go with him, a random unrelated event happens and your character goes off with someone else…neither your character or the player would have any reason to know or do this. Spend your pound/dollar on a chocolate bar, it'll last longer!

ouch - pass

I thought this might be fun, but the puzzles are impossible without a walkthrough...and some are even difficult WITH a walkthrough. The graphics are pretty good for the era. The voiceovers are alright. The story is just ok, and to me, is lacking a fair bit.. Having played dark corners and then going back to this I guess I had too high of hopes.

Climatic, Hard and Fhtagn

I'm not usually play a point'n click adventures, but now I decided as it's based on Lovecraft. This game is very climatic and gives you 1001 possibilities to die (by cultists, The Old Ones or simple traps). If you are not familiar with this kind of game I recommend a reading partially walkthrough when you stuck (and believe me - it's VERY easy). Despite the game has a great scenario and atmosphere it has a very diffucult controls and sometimes the usage of character skills is not triggering correctly (sometimes I couldn't look on the certain item/object because character stayed the one pixel from the border). I think that this game need to be remastered when the horrible controls will be fixed and music and graphic would be improved - then I could easily give a 5/5.
