Caesar III
A fascinating game which requires a great deal of skill to play at the hardest setting ("Very Hard"). It does not quite work because some of the sites chosen are not suitable for cities. For example, Londinium has few sites avaiable for docks which means that it is impossible to import oil and wine to all the places which have enough farmland to near to residential areas. Lugdunum has hardly any farmland which is not on high ground away from where clean water can be supplied and also has natives controlling access to that farmland. Massilia has requirement for such high ratings of culture and prosperity required that it simply cannot be completed successfully. Fortuneately I was able to complete the other city, Lindum which simply required me to have enough legions to fight off the natives. All in all thiis is a very realistic exercise in the problems facing Roman governors. However, I found it impossible to prevent people becoming disgruntled and leaving in the early days of planning a city. If you can't attract migrants you can't generate enough wealth to keep Caesar (who requires an annual tribute) happy ... and his legions will start to attack you every year. These are incredibly difficult to fight off. I also think that the algorithm covering the distribution of resources needs to be improved as it is possible to have warehouses full of things that markets only a few yards away despearately need. All in all, making each scenario work gave me great satisfaction (when I found this was possible). I would appreciate a guide to how to complete the "impossible" scenarios. There is also a separate city construction kit where you can practice your skills withoput having to have a career as a governor. This, though interesting does not have targets, so it's difficult to see the point of it.
