Buzz Aldrin's Space Program Manager (SPM) Road to the Moon is the ultimate game of space exploration. It is the mid 1950s and the race for dominance between the US and the Soviet Union is about to move into a new dimension: space. Take charge of the US or Soviet space agencies - your duty is be the first to the moon. Carefully manage your budget by opening programs, spending R&D funds on improving the hardware, recruiting personnel and launching space missions in this realistic turn based strategy game.

Road to the Moon features the race to the Moon, the historical event that started in the early 1960s and that ended in July 1969, after the successful completion of the Apollo 11 mission.

The game features both a campaign and a sandbox mode. In campaign mode, you will be able to play as the Director of either NASA or the Soviet Space Agency in order to beat the other side to be the first on the Moon. You can also lead the Global Space Agency (GSA), an fictional space agency that combines programs from all the major space agencies in the world . In the GSA campaign, you will need to address the requests and short-term goals issued by government, and is geared towards those players who prefer a game experience focused on exploration instead of competition. Alternatively, all three space agencies feature a Sandbox mode, which provides a more open-ended experience and allows you to try out different approaches without any political pressure.

You will be able to develop dozens of programs. Some examples include the X-15 and the PKA space planes, the Sputnik satellite, the Mercury, Voskhod, Apollo and Soyuz manned spacecraft and the Mars Viking probe. You are not limited to missions that did launch, as as the game also allows you to try out many concepts that were planned but that never left the drawing board. For example, instead of sending men to the Moon using the Lunar Orbit Rendezvous (LOR) approach used by Project Apollo in the late 1960s and early 1970s, you will be able to rewrite history and use either the alternative Gemini Earth Orbit Rendezvous (EOR) or Gemini Direct Ascent (DA) schemes. The number of options available ensure every game will be different and there is huge replay value.

To verify its accuracy and authenticity, the game, is being developed in consultation with Dr. Buzz Aldrin, former U.S. Air Force combat pilot (66 missions in Korea) and NASA astronaut, who took part in the first Moon landing mission and became the second human being to walk on the Moon.

If you have any interest in space exploration and the events that transpired during the 'Race to the Moon', this is a game you just do not want to miss!

Features

  • Three different campaign modes: play as NASA or the Soviet space agency in order to be the first on the Moon or play as the Global Space Agency (GSA) and deal with the short-term objectives issued by politicians.
  • Manage all aspects of your space agencies from their inception in the 1950's through to the manned lunar landing missions
  • Play the race to the Moon campaign mode against other players using Slitherine’s PBEM system.
  • The Sandbox mode allows you to play as any of the three space agencies and removes all competition restrictions. You will have a fully featured playground in order to try out different approaches to space exploration!
  • Create space programs and launch missions inspired by real programs such as the X-15 Space plane, the Sputnik satellite, the Gemini, Vostok and Apollo manned spacecraft and a lot more!
  • Research and develop dozens of mission components from several program categories.
  • Develop your facility with advanced structures and upgrades including the Vehicle Assembly Building and the Mission Control Centre.
  • Recruit and train astronaut candidates and assign them to missions.
  • Assemble an elite team of Scientists, Engineers, Technicians (SET), Flight Controllers for the best chance of success.
  • Manage your agency's budget.
  • Mission components have an associated reliability factor and can cause catastrophic failures.
  • Vast amounts of historical research ensure that the game's huge database features missions that launched and many more that never left the drawing board!
  • A vast array of components built in 3D and rendered out in exquisite detail allow you to follow the progress of your missions via animated sequences.
  • The Buzz-opedia gives background information on the real programs, missions and hardware throughout the game.
  • The soundtrack features a unique playlist for each space agency and numerous tracks for the mission animations.

A great upgrade from BARIS

I have long been a player of Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space (BARIS), which was based upon the board game Liftoff! This game is very much an upgrade of BARIS. For those familiar with BARIS, you will be right at home with this game. This game takes running a space program and extends it. The interface is more modern and the level of detail is much greater than in BARIS. Many of the same concepts from BARIS exist here. You must purchase and research your rocket and vehicle programs, missions are based in steps where checks are made for success or failure, you hire and train astronauts and plan and execute the missions with the goal of beating the other player (whether it is the Russions, or you are playing the Russians trying to beat NASA) to the moon. Upgrades found in this game that were not in BARIS. You now hire specific researchers and train them to specialize them to research rockets, manned rockets, satellites, crewed spacecraft, etc. The rate at which reliability increases with your programs is dependent upon the skills of the researchers you assign to a program. You also hire and train the flight controllers. Flight controllers are trained for specific positions, like booster, spacecraft systems, trajectory, etc. During each mission you assign the flight controllers to the positions that control the flight, when problems go wrong then the skill of the flight controllers gets consulted for fixing a problem. For example if there is a problem with the booster, the flight controller at the booster position is consulted for his booster skill and can have an affect on whether or not the problem gets fixed. If you were a fan of BARIS, you cannot go wrong with this game, this is BARIS on steroids!

Dry at first then surprisingly immersive

I got this on Steam a couple years ago and honestly didn't read the description very well. At first I was let down by the presentation... very much an administrative sim under the science and personnel. But after a while, I realized I couldn't put it down. One. More. Turn. Just. One. More. Turn! Once you realize you can't chase every project and still beat the Soviets, the grand strategy part falls into place and it becomes a tense experience full of surprises, setbacks and triumphs. Push past the first impression and you'll discover a complex strategy game that's amazingly fun. Plus it actually has Buzz Aldrin. You literally can't get cooler than that.

An Okay browser game

To be honest, this game is a bit too linear and basic. Exciting on a first play, but it gets old very fast if you play again. The is a lot of potential in the name and the idea of having a space race simulator, but this game is just a bunch of space screenshots with a percentage success roll for every action. If you're a space nerd like me, get it, if it's on a 90% sale only!

Weak "Race Into Space" Sequel

"Buzz Aldrin's Race Into Space" was a 1993 game of the US/USSR race to be the first to the moon. It featured animation, original voice and video recordings of the actual 1960s events, so it's a classic for both space and computer-game nerds (and you can find it free in a few places). 21 years later, "Space Program Manager" was a (de)make without the videos, but the same RNG research, build and watch mechanics. On the plus side, it has expanded the robotic missions to other planets but the mechanics are the same. The full price was ludicrous for a game like this when it came out in 2014, so I haven't bought it until GoGs steep discount. It's fine and fun but in the mean time ... "Mars Horizon" came out in 2020, is around the same price, and does a much better job of moving the focus away from the cold war If you only buy one, buy that. Don't pay full price for either.

An unworthy successor to BARIS

BARIS (or Buzz Aldrin's Race into Space if you're not a cool 90s kid), was a punishing but very engaging space program simulator. It had a clear interface and featured videoclips and audio from the space race period for most of the missions. This game is not a worthy successor. I say this for a several reasons. First, the interface is unintuitive and badly laid out. The missions you want to launch are not listed on their own screen, and are instead buried inside the research menu of all places. That's just weird. Additionally, the game feels like it was designed to maximize clicking. Scheduling the simplest possible mission (Sputnik launch) takes no less than 10 clicks. And you have to repeat this process every time you want to launch the mission. Again, poor game design. The UI is aggressively bland, failing to highlight important information and adopting baffling UI/UX choices. Important numbers are often hidden at the edge of the screen, using text size and colour that blends into the background. On the screen showing who reached various milestones first, there are no national flags or other easily-visually-readable ways of displaying who was the first to reach that milestone. Instead it's a bland logo for the milestone itself (that is the same for both sides), with the date underneath in small text. Why not display the flag of the first nation to reach the milestone as the first in line, with the second nation's flag coming second (and smaller)? It's the obvious way to easily convey this information, but it was not done. I realize this is vey specific, but I'm mentioning it to make the point: in a menu-driven game, very little thought was put into the menus. In terms of the non-menu graphics, the period videos have been replaced with CGI movie clips that are... alright. Not great, but alright. The sound design is reasonably good, but still not as atmospheric as BARIS. This game comes 25 years after BARIS, but is not as oood. I cannot recommend it.
