Underwhelming
This is a clone of the Alex Austin's Freeware puzzle game "Bride Building Game" published in 2000, and the series that followed with some elements from Portal thrown in. As far as bridge building games go (they are an entire sub-genre), Bridge Constructor is nowhere near the top. It is made for Android and really does play like a dumbed down Smartphone app. It obviously was made with touch screens in mind, playing with mouse feels a bit awkward. It is also missing many features other bridge building games have: Only 2 materials, only 1 type of vehicle to cross the bridges, lacking in physics options, lacking in graphics detail, and no first-person (vehicle) view - obviously with this basically being an Android game. I picked it up anyways because I thought Portal would add some story, a nice touch, and number of new puzzle elements to the original idea. Unfortunately, it does and still does not: First things first - there is no progressing story a la Portal, it lacks the charm that Portal had, and unfortunately the Austrian developers are just nowhere near as funny as the original. Jokes are basically 1:1 copies of the Portal 1 monologues but this time around feel forced and strangely out of place. The puzzle elements added are turrets, lasers, buttons and portals, which should spice things up: Unfortunately this game lacks just the last little bit of necessary creativity to combine them smoothly, leaving the impression of 2 mediocre clones awkwardly mixed into one. Since this is still a physics based bridge building game where you have zero control over the vehicles, it ends up playing like an odd combination of Lemmings with a marble run. With the original Bridge Builder series still being available, this game is entertaining, but just not as good as the original Bridge Builder 2 et al, which for the same price has way nicer graphics, a lot more materials and tons more vehicles and effects to experiment with.
