Breath of Fire IV

I got to walk around a bit watching very well animated characters doing cool animations while a girl with wings kept following me around. Some dude called me a brat. I broke my sword. And then in the background somebody fought five dinosaurs and got knocked off a bridge. I need to know what happens next.

Happy to see Capcom making this available. BOF4 was overlooked at the time, but was a masterclass in 32-bit animation. Like all the BOFs, it oozes charm.

+ Amazing art design, sprite-work, and animations + Cool combat mechanics with the Combo system that allows you to chain spells/skills together to add new effects. Also allows you to switch in any character at anytime so no one ever feels left out + Lots of cool spells you can learn and equip on characters outside of just leveling up. Certain enemy abilities have a chance to be learned in combat by having any character guard while the ability is used. + In addition to the above, several Masters can be found throughout the world in which you can apprentice any character under and recieve certain stat bonuses upon level up and also learn new skills by achieving certain feats + Fishing minigame is robust and well designed and offers great rewards - A couple of party members are undeveloped and don't get their time to shine within the story - Most dungeons are quite short and over quickly except for the final one - The difficulty leans on the easy side and doesn't force you to take advantage of the combo system - Fearie Village minigame feels undercooked and certain aspects are convulated

I've had the game for SO many years, but I bought the game here to support it so the other games may possibly be relased. Unlike the other game, this has two perspectives that makes it more nuanced than just "good and bad". If I had one gripe, it's that the controls need to be so it can be easily used on a controller. It only has keyboard controls. Also there are some things like mini-games like fishing that has plenty of uses in battle. In face I never would have beaten the final boss without all the fish I caught through the game because it took all my other items to beat. It's a more difficult game than I'm used to with Final Fantasy, but never unfair either.
