Breath of Fire IV

A well told story in a beatifully crafted game world, a nice soundtrack that changes depending on the game situation and immerses you even deeper. A great amount of things to do on the side, that just invite you to leave the main story alone for a moment and go explore. An intuitive combat system with well thought out mechanics. What else does a great RPG need? Ah right, the dark twist. No worries, already in. Easily the best part of the series. And also a completely independent story, so you can enjoy it without having played the prequels.

I honestly did not know this was coming to pc. An ABSOLUTE GEM! Now they need to port the first three :) And at 10$ INSTANT WIN! I am also glad to see that they are patching the game too. Very first glitch was on the sand cutscene before the sand flier came into view. The Moving sand and the seam where it blends into the background had a large glitched bar across the screen. The other was how they music it played. It doesn't seamlessly play. It's like they used MP3's to play the tracks. Other than that. Game plays very fluently. No slowdowns. Framerate is playing at 60fps? I believe it is. The visuals still look good except for the character sprites. They look offputting higher resolutions while the higher resolutions sharpens and re-rezes the rest of the game graphics. Hopefully the new patches fixes that. Other than that. Great game and I hope to see the first three on pc soon too.

The game runs smoothly and while the sprites may not work well due to certain aspect ratio's it is just like it was if you played it on the ps1. There's also the fact that it immediately can recognize and pick up plugged in controllers also is A+ for this. All in all, as a fan of the Breath of Fire series, I'm perfectly happy with it.

Such a great game, wish the developers would make a new one for next gen consoles but keep the original spirit and feel from the first 4 games.

Breath of Fire is not the first RPG that comes to my mind when I say "My favorite" but this is a game that really taught me how to tell a good and captivating story. Maybe this is not most bombastic RPG ever made, maybe it pales in visual comparison to such beasts like Final Fantasy VIII and IX, It may not have the deepest gameplay mechanics or the best spectacle, but instead it definitely has a soul. Breath of Fire IV has unique way of telling its story, allowing players to just hop back in to the world quickly and by playing first 10 minutes I realized one thing - man, this game is so cinematic without any pre-rendered CGI. Just by applying camera works and basic visual effects, Capcom managed to make beautifully looking game with impressive cutscenes. It's not about technology - it's about art-style and direction. And game excells at it. About the port - I have few issues, like character sprites clipping through objects and I am unsure if it's the port's fault or my Graphics card doesn't like this old game, or maybe it's a renderer issue? But to be honest, it's a very minor one. So minor in fact, I don't wanna even use it as excuse to reduce the score I give to it. It's not about issues after all - it's about preserving the game that many people missed for many reasons, but those who remember this game, remember it fondly. Because behind muted colors, slow burn start and lo-fi music, this game is something very, very special.
