Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain

I was shocked when I started this port up and it ran significantly slower than the PS1 original no matter what settings I tried. Apparently, the PC version is locked at 40 FPS and there are a few other issues as well, but there is a GL Wrapper patch that resolves all of these issues. The game itself is five stars, but the unpatched port might surprise you.

Ich hatte Blood Omen seinerzeit für die Playstation 1 im Jahr 1997 gekauft und gespielt und 2006 wieder verkauft. Zum Zeitpunkt seines Erscheinens war "Resident Evil" der Maßstab. 1997 war die Präsentation beachtlich und innovativ, man hat so viele FMV-Sequenzen eben kaum zu Gesicht bekommen. Nachdem ich es hier auf GOG wieder gekauft habe, ist mir aufgefallen, wie schlecht es gealtert ist und vor allem, daß die Endgegner viel zu leicht zu besiegen sind. Es gibt keinen wählbaren Schwierigkeitsgrad oder eine Auswahl an Charakteren. Zudem fehlt es an Motivitation für ein neues Durchspielen, der zuvor erworbene Status als etwa "Baron" ist ohne Belang: Man schaltet nichts frei, keine Bonusgegenstände, Szenarien, gar nix. Man kriegt am Ende eine Statistik präsentiert und das war's. Resident Evil hat bereits Monate zuvor vorgemacht, was auch da leistbar ist. Ich spiele Resident Evil auch heute noch - 27 Jahre später - gerne. Blood Omen hat außer die versteckten 100 Geheimnisse nichts Besonderes zu bieten. Diese Geheimnisse sind lediglich ein Mehr an bereits vorhandenen Zaubersprüchen, aber nichts, was das Spielen erleichtert. Man findet eben z.B. ein paar zusätzliche Spruchkarten, die man sowieso schon hat und vor allem ausreichend sind. Die Endgegner kann man ohne besondere Taktik oder Kenntnisse auf Anhieb zu erledigen. Immer druff reicht (leider) völlig aus. Man macht mit Blood Omen nichts falsch, es ist schon ein ordentliches Spiel. Man verpasst aber auch nix, auch nichts Spielehistorisches.

Great story, great presentation. But man, the mechanics and gameplay have not aged well. At all. Clunky menus, bad combat/hitboxes/movement, it's unbearable after a while, unless you have extreme patience.

I played this game when I was a child in a game rental store in a garage in the northeast of Brazil, I spent years looking for it until I found it here recently, my inner child is very happy and despite the years, the game is still very good, at the most young people who don't know this relic, forget the graphics and focus on the wonderful gothic world of nosgorth
