Feels like a mod for SHOGO.

SHOGO: MOBILE ARMOR DIVISION, another Monolith game, uses the same Lithtech Engine. That's great. But why does Blood 2 have to LOOK like SHOGO? SHOGO was an anime-inspired FPS where it had sequences of being in a giant transformerable-mech bot and stomping thorugh cities blasting other mechs (it was not as great as that sounds, trust me). That game had a particular style in the 3D characters, in that they didn't even look like anime but blocky mutants. They look like skinny 3D model character from Dire Straits "Money For Nothing..." video. Terrible. Terrible even by the standards at the time. So now we get Blood 2, and they look just as bad. The game feels like I'm playing SHOGO but playing a "Blood mod" made for it by some fans. The 3D graphics are terrible, the physics are pretty much non-existant. The weapons look and feel cheap, like right outta SHOGO. The way NPCs and others move and "react" appears almost exactly like those in SHOGO. What a let-down. Kudos to GOG for at least bringing it back. The original Blood 2 was a buggy hot mess. As for the rest, the sound is cruddy, very low quality, some elements in the story/gameplay that rip-off Halflife, feels very tacked on. The sterilized 3D graphics, "puzzle"-level design drain all the fun. It's hard to take it seriously. It is no comparison to the original Blood and its gritteness. The whole "future" setting seems tacked on so they can rip-off Halflife with portals, future-y weapons, and stuff. Overall, the game feels uninspired. It was like the only fun the developers making it was putting in the cheesy jokes. Fans may wanna get it to (sort of) how the story progresses (to the toilet). Side note, the GOG version graphics framerate drops to single digits when looking at lighted enviros. Playing in software mode fixes that. Ironically, the software mode gives it a more "retro" look like the first game, and while terrible, it helps (to slighlty help) give the game the atmosphere it should have had.

I'd give this 5 stars if it worked... but sadly, no.

I got this game quite some time ago, in CD form. I have since tried several other versions, but none work on any modern system I've seen. The problem is with the Lithtech engine (coded by a company called, itself, Lithtech, but in partnership with Microsoft, who did a large part of the coding). The Lithtech engine looked great for its time, but has been abandoned for years, and used "special tricks" allowing it access to the OS in ways that other programs were denied... and which are now no longer available (due to security vulnerabilities, etc). Several Lithtech games have since received fan-produced fixes... TRON 2.0, for example, and the F.E.A.R. series. Others remain unplayable on any modern system (Blood 2, No One Lives Forever, etc). These are GREAT games... a lot of fun... but sadly, they fail, repeatedly, with a common error. No amount of "compatibility fixes" or the like have been able to get past these issues, for those who experience them. TRON 2.0 required an entirely new EXE to run properly, but does so flawlessly now. F.E.A.R, by contrast, would "sort of" run, but would slow to a total standstill in mere minutes if you had more than one or two USB devices in your chain... but a fix involving a replacement DLL created by a particularly ingenious guy managed to turn F.E.A.R. into a perfectly playable game again. Now... Blood 2 is a fun game. Not GREAT, not "landmark," by any stretch of the imagination... but fun. Like a couple of other vampire games out there, you recover heath in multiple ways, but feeding on humans is the most effective way in general... which adds a somewhat twistedly "fun" element to the game. The humor throughout the game is very up-front... it's not a SERIOUS game (for example, early on, you get a phone call in a laundrymat where you're given a survey about violence in video games). The gameplay is challenging, but not too difficult. The characters are entertaining, while not really being totally engrossing. You get plenty of "one-liners" as so many 1st-person games of the era provided, of course. The gameplay involves plenty of gunplay, knife-play, and direct hand (or tooth?) combat... The overall design is not a standout, but it's a fun game. It doesn't really feel all that much like its predecessor, which explains most of the negative reviews, of course. But I actually prefer this one to the first game in the series (as this gives me more of a "really there, really doing this" vibe). I know, I'm atypical in that way, but it's the truth. I really, REALLY wish I could get this to run on my modern, 64-bit operating system machine. But... I can't. I always get the same pop-up error, after the launcher screen, no matter what "tweaks" I try. I really hope someday someone who knows the Lithtech engine(s) better than I do comes up with an actual fix for this (and, PLEASE!!!! ... for "No One Lives Forever!")

A decent game, but bad sequel

Compared to the first one this is a way weaker game. Level design is annoying and bad at times, game crashes a lot and is buggy. AI is annoying and the challenge come from unfair aimbot like accuracy where enemies can see you instantly and start shooting. Also this game has pretty stupid weapon limit. You have 10 slots, but there are more weapons. So if you already have 10 you need to drop one of the weapons. But still its solid fun and decent game. There are fun guns, shooting is fine and Caleb is solid. If you just want to enjoy and see the came through, I recommend going with easy difficulty. Then the enemy instant aim is more tolerable and you can enjoy the game without constant quick saving and loading.

Its no Blood 1

I'm not one to harp on games, especially the ones that I grew up on, but Blood 2 fails to live up to the expectations of its predecessor on every front. Blood 2 is one of those rare sequels from this time period that you can't help but think was ruined by the whole need for Polygonal 3D. They essentially ruined the atmosphere and soul of a game that was built almost entirely around those 2 things. The graphics are horrible and can't convey the same emotion that the 2D sprites did in the original, the weapons feel week (No matter how powerful they are) and the enemy's and level design are abysmal. The only reason I rated this game 2 stars was that, at the time, it took me so long to get this game to work that when I was finally able to play it, I had a sense of satisfaction that has tinged my memory of it, as crazy as that may sound. All that being said. if you want the real Blood experience with all its humor and disturbing imagery, do yourself a favor and pick up One Whole Unit of Blood, you won't regret it.
