Much Better than I Remembered

BioShock didn't need a direct sequel like BS2, but having just replayed the entire trilogy I can say BS2 earns its place. Before I get into that: I played the remastered version start to finish, all DLC's included. It didn't crash at all, but your mileage may vary. I suspect many of these reviews were written before patches came out. There may be other changes people disliked about the remaster, but you get the original version with your purchase so it doesn't really matter. BS2 meaningfully expands on the combat system of the first game, manages to tell a worthwhile story (though not as impactful as BS1), and it makes good use of its second trip through Rapture to show not just wealthy districts that have deteriorated, but also poor areas that were suffering long before stuff hit the fan, helping illustrate why the city was never going to last. Generally, BS2 feels like it rounds out the world that BS1 introduced while taking the opportunity to optimize the player's ability to experiment with different plasmids and ammo types. It's fun, it presents yet more of the excellent setting BS1 introduced while telling its own story, and it's frequently on sale. Play BS1 first, and if you like it, definitely give BS2 a shot.

Both have issues, pick your poison

Buying Remastered will give you the original on GOG too, but unfortunately they both have problems. The original is more stable, but requires external fixes for things like FOV and audio balance and has issues running on a modern OS. Remastered is good to go out of the box, but WILL crash. I was lucky and got through with only two crashes, once with a large number of security bots on screen at once, and once during the final sequences where you're pushing through hordes of enemies who are also fighting each other. Seems to be tied to how much is going on at once, but there's no performance dip beforehand, it just goes from running perfectly to CTD, so I'm not sure. Still an excellent game, it's just a real shame both versions are so flawed now.

No sound issue and how to fix it

I have a pretty modern gaming pc but when I try to play some old games like BioShock 1 and 2 sound simply does not work properly. This worked for me (Windows 10): - Find the file Bioshock2HD.exe in your installation directory (ex. C:\BioShock 2 Remastered\Build\Final\Bioshock2HD.exe) - Then right click on it, select Properties, Compatibility - Check the "Run thist program as an administrator" This way you can launch the game using your shortcuts or the GOG launcher. I also had 4 crashes at the entrance of the "Hall of the Future", 2 of them forced a full system reboot!!! So save often would you kindly?

Fun, but Crashes Often

Before I get into the review, I have to mention that this game crashed constantly for me, sometimes after less than a minute of gameplay. I found a few fixes online, and they didn't seem to work; your mileage may vary. This sequel is pretty similar to its predecessor in most ways, so I'll be talking mostly about its new elements. The weapons are technically different, but functionally very similar, and a lot of the plasmids are the same; like before, you won't have to worry about Adam too much, because there aren't enough useful upgrades that you're likely to run out. The main difference is that you'll have moments where you have to defend a character while enemies swarm you. It's not an escort, exactly... tower defense, I guess? I don't typically like these kinds of things, and you'll be doing this A LOT, but I wasn't as bothered by it as I thought I'd be. The biggest difference is in the story, and without getting too much into spoiler territory, the central theme is just the exact opposite of that of the first game. That doesn't sound like much, but it does lend itself to more moral ambiguity, and so most of the debate is worth having. My main gripe is that the counterpoint isn't as strong as it could be, and part of that is that the character making it doesn't show the work that brought them to that conclusion. Yes, the main antagonist does some horrific things in the name of her ideals, but that discredits the character; not the ideals. You have a few more moral choices than you did throughout the first BioShock, but none of them are terribly complex. All summed up, I'd say it's exactly on par with the original, but more grounded; fewer highs and lows, but same total score.

Crashfest the Game

The game itself is fantastic, but sadly it doesnt seem to be able to run on modern day hardware. In my experience I havent been able to play the game longer than an hour without experiencing a crash. Sometimes the game might last 15 minutes. It is a known issue and because the game doesnt autosave, often a crash means setting you back your whole session. Just don't do it to yourself and save your money.
