Battle Isle Platinum (includes Incubation)

Battle Isle Platinum and all its components add up to create a very unique and fun-to-play game. The problem is that the games' cutscenes glitch repeatedly on my Windows 7 x64 PC with a quad-core i7 processor. This, in and of itself, doesn't totally ruin the games, as they are still playable, but a game loses some of its magic without the addition of a storyline. Interestingly, Battle Isle 1 and 2 run with almost no glitches, likely because of the minimal to non-existent amount of cutscenes. In any case, the games are an enjoyable take on SF strategy and tactics, and if that's all you're looking for, this might be the right buy for you.

I havent tried the mod myself, but it fixed the running issues. I could not make the game run without the mod, but it works like a charm. The game in itself is a great turnbased strategy game. Its the type of game I always loved. Its one of the first games in sci-fy enviroment with a bit of a story. Imagine X-com the new games, and then just turn back time. Would be great to see such games done more, gameplay is just the best!!

I only played one mission in Battle Isle 2, so I cannot give a comprehensive review. I did read the entire manual though. One drawback I found is the interface feels dated. It is still very usable, just not as convenient as modern games. One surprising feature I found was that difficulty governs the complexity of the game and not (necessarily) arbitrary boosts to AI or enemy strength. On higher difficulties, for example, the flanking mechanic is first introduced, followed by flanking dependency on the weapons of the units doing the flanking. That has got to be the coolest way to change difficulty I have seen in a strategy game. It gives some insight to how the game developers approached the game. I think Battle Isle deserves to be checked out just for that.

The first game is one of the most satisfying single or two player turn based experiences on PC. You are rewarded for making smart tactical decisions on the small scale and implementing a long term strategy across the entire battle. Simple, elegant yet endless tactical variations, closest thing to chess since chess.
