Not a lesser Ultima Underworld,different

[Technical Note]: Seems to crash above 1080p and some visuals are corrupted on modern OS (not the native condition under which the game was released) but the same goes with Steam version. [Review]: Everything in this game felt interesting be it for its special mechanics or the atmosphere and story. Generally speaking all the sections of the game had something to bring to the table and the semi open world feeling was great as each section gave a sense of accomplishment as you discovered and unlocked more sections of the game. So while linear for the most part levels wise, a good portion of the content could be dealt differently with alternative results and hidden elements (including undocumented spells) that were fun to enjoy on a second and third walkthrough of the game and allowed players to enjoy multiple gameplay styles be it a pure mage, warrior or thief as the three main character types were all technically accomplishable to the end and satisfying! [Semi-spoiler - I once finished the game realizing I did not went to the Crypt at all which felt amazing] Overall by looking at this game years after completing it the first time I can notice some lack of polish in the gameplay mechanics and some rough edges on the visual level compared to other games of the time but was still a solid game nonetheless. [Spoiler: One element that kept bugging thought the years I re-played this gamer were the requirements of some of the best weapons in the game that penalized “jack of all trade” type of character as a player with medium strength and medium dexterity could not use at least one of the best swords and one best daggers that the game offered which was kind of a bummer in retrospective. Also the difficulty of the final boss with a rogue character was a bit annoying as you had to be prepared to fiddle around to be able to beat the game in that context]. This is a must have game for Ultima Underworld fans! P.S.: Would be a dream in VR with how magic was implemented!

Fell in love...

With the setting and magic system... It very interactive, good old RPG. Maybe a little clunky interface but who cares. This is very nice RPG. Use magic :) And always mod the game if there's a mod for modern resolutions... and there is: "Arx Libertatis is an improved, cross-platform and open source engine for Arx Fatalis, a 2002 first-person role-playing game / dungeon crawler developed by Arkane Studios."

Liebevolles RPG mit 2000er-Schwächen

"Arx Fatalis" hat alle Vorzüge eines liebevollen Rollenspiels der 2000er - und all seine Schwächen. Das Spiel erzeugt von Anfang an eine tolle Atmosphäre. Allein das anfängliche Erkunden der Goblinkerker macht große Freude und zieht in die Welt. Mit einem Knochen oder einem Dolch ausgerüstet, geht es an die ersten, bombenschweren Kämpfe. Ich hatte mich entschieden, einen Dieb mit Fernkampfeigenschaften anzupeilen. Mein Tipp: Lieber den Kämpfer wählen, denn wie in vielen Spielen dieser Zeit kommt nichts an die Schadensmengen eines Kämpfers heran. Hinzu kommt: Als ich nach etwa 4 Stunden Spielzeit endlich einen Bogen kaufen konnte, zeigte sich eine gewisse Schwäche im Kampfsystem: Pfeile flogen teilweise einfach durch den Gegner hindurch. Insgesamt ist das Kampfsystem auf der einen Seite spannend und beinhaltet viel Vor und Zurück wie dereinst bei dem Amiga-Klassiker "Trapped: Das Rad von Talmar". Auf der anderen Seite habe ich viele Kämpfe nur gewonnen, weil sich der Gegner im Stuhl verhakt hat oder einen bestimmten Levelbereich nicht verlassen konnte. Ohnehin legt "Arx Fatalis" aber viel Wert auf die Nicht-Kämpfe, also die Rätseleinlagen. Diese sind eine adventure-lastige Abwechslung mit Schlüsseln unter dem Kissen und dem Backen von Weinkuchen. Insgesamt ist "Arx Fatalis" eine abwechslungsreiche Erfahrung und für den Budgetpreis hier bei GOG eine klare Empfehlung. Gerade nach einer Spielzeit von etwa 5 Stunden haben sich aber einige Bugs getürmt: NPCs, die ich verfolgen sollte, verhakten sich ineinander, eine Tür schloss sich ohne Aussicht, sie wieder öffnen zu können, und als ich beim zweiten Versuch ein Kind vor einer Opferung gerettet habe, hat sich mir nicht erschlossen, dass das Spiel an irgendeiner Stelle weitergeht. Hier zeigen sich die Schwächen von "Arx Fatalis", die auch zum Beispiel bei "Dungeon Lords" zu sehen waren: Wird etwas nicht genau in der Art ausgeführt, wie es vom Spiel vorgesehen ist, kommt man manchmal nicht weiter.

Good game

The best part of this game is drawing the runes on the screen to cast magic. That's so cool, feels like I'm actually casting spells instead of just hitting a button. Overall I got a lot of enjoyment from this game, I'm not one for RPGs, but I enjoyed this and played it through to the end. I've played, or at least started Morrowind, another popular RPG but frankly I didn't much care for it. The problem with Morrowind for me is that there's too much info. You can ask everyone like 20 different questions and they all have some cookie-cutter response. They're not really characters in my opinion, they're just objects to interact with that dispense data. Not so with Arx Fatalis. Many of the characters have individual, spoken dialogue. The story isn't as deep, but I find the world itself more believable, it has more character because the people in that world are more individual. Some of the NPCs are useless, no mistake, maybe they say the same 5-6 lines of dialogue, but its THEIR dialogue, and few if any other characters say the same thing. I would've liked a little more to the story though in terms of length. Perhaps a little more opportunity for exploration. But the developers obviously chose to tell a tight, fairly-linear story and they achieved that. Overall. I enjoyed the game and recommend that anyone who has an interest in FP-RPGs to give it a go. For the price it's well worth it. And like I say, the spell-casting is so cool.

awesome classic dungeon crawler

a+++ classic dungeon crawler in the vein of eye of the beholder or morrowind or fable very good game. I was looking for this game and gog had it. battle systems and action is great. give it a try if u like dark dungeons filled with monsters and rats or spiders
