Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura

I remember playing this when I was a teen and it confused the crap out of me on the mechanics of the game and what the heck you needed to do. Like they literally throw your bran new baby toon in a town and say good luck! After some perseverance and sticking to a character model, like a warrior/necromancer .. I was literally able to destroy most enemies in seconds. The game will hype a monster up big time saying this creature has the strength of 10 men and has talons that can cut you in half! We'll let me go see about that.. nope! killed him in 3 hits and some magic and now he's my undead b*tch. The game's plot is geared for adults which was pretty cool and the humor was pretty witty and crude which we should all love. Just didn't care for the lack of direction and you having to explore everything to find out where you need to go in such a large game like this.

A unique settling a well-written and interesting story this games biggest flaw is that it's pacing is badly skewed, with certain early dungeons that are extremely long and difficult and very low level caps throw off the whole balance of the game, since despite an interesting character progression system it is very easy to have maxed out a character less than 1/2 way through the plot. Worth a purchase nonetheless.

I enjoyed this game for the 8 hours I was able to put into it. The setting is really interesting and the dialogue is well thought out. Unfortunately the game runs terribly on Windows 10 and needs to be restarted every 10 minutes or it slows to a crawl. I have tried every possible suggestion and the game simply doesn't run very smoothly on anything past Windows 7. If you can play it on a virtual machine or an older OS this game is great however. Hopefully a patch can fix the issues, but I can't give it 5 stars seeing that most people will see issues.

Made by some of the names behind fallout 1 + 2, need I say more? It has it's problems, but the story, setting and gameplay are fantastic. The main quest tree gives you a distant goal to focus on while side quests and party members entertain along the way. Set in a relatively unique steam-meets-magic punk setting that really pushed my buttons (I'm more sci-fi than fantasy). Combat is a little clunky and full of random misses early game, but it gets better and a little more varied as you go along. Not just clouded in nostalgia either, I installed it a couple of months ago and I'm slowly making my way through the campaign again. While it is a bit raw in comparison to modern rpgs, it still holds it's own against newer, younger models.
