Another World: 20th Anniversary Edition

Another World is not only a world-wide masterpiece of computer entertainment industry. It’s not only a milestone in the world of computer games. For many of us it’s also a lot of great memories! I remember myself sitting in the dark room with my friend back then in 1990ties in front of his brand new Amiga computer on a hot summer day. When we were watching that awesome intro when Lester was running the experiment our jaws were slowly dropping down and at the end we were just staring at the screen in silent contemplation. What can I say more that this! And it was just a beginning of many, many hours of fantastic gaming. Bow before Eric Chahi’s lifetime achievement. He was and is a progenitor of all home grown indie developers. With this game he engraved his name on the hall of fame of the best games ever created. For many years I’ve been waiting for any possible sequel… and yet the 15th anniversary is giving to us a refreshed original. Better graphics and improved music by JF Freitas. Now we have a chance to go back to our memories. On Gog.com you also get more than a game itself. I highly recommend to download A Making of video. A must to have for every old school game player!

Another World is a puzzle platform game that you can complete in an evening sit. There is little gameplay, and lots of quick deaths + restarts. The strength of the game is in the story. From the onset to the very end, Another World breaths a surprising story of some strange world. You don’t understand, you don’t need to understand. It’s the experience that counts. Today, the story is less strong, due to rather dated gameplay that tells the story.

I'm guessing this game ceased to function with the departure of 32-bit support for macs years go, doesn't even start, just quits immediately. I'm running on macOS Sonoma 14.2.1. At least I bought it on sale, but I would rather it worked, I miss this gem.

Sadly i must stay that Another World 20th Anniversary Edition is bugged and almost not playable. Developer has forgotten about game. On every death game crash and you cannot play, only restart works but it's very frustrating. It was first time when i demand refund. Shame on you Digital Lounge! Eric Chahi fight for your brand!

You will see alot of reviews on GOG focused on criticizing the gameplay of Another World.These gamers tend to have a problem with the trial & error gameplay that is common with 80% of all computer based platformers. This is an odd criticism towards Another World, considering Another World is the defacto standard for all computer based platformers. Another World has one of the greatest examples of mood ever established within a game. The game uses cold colors throughout the environment that symbolizes the stark isolation that is prevailent throughout the game. The music is sparse with synthetic notes coming through at specific moments only to enhance a scene in which you either have to fight your way out of a tense situation, or retreat from a dangerous foe. Another World should not be missed by anyone who values artistry in games. Negative reviews should be looked upon with skepticism as it is understood that they were written with little understanding to the overall history of games when written.
