A good game, but not without flaws

Back when it was released for the Xbox 360, was repeatedly compared to the Playstation 3 exclosive Heavy Rain, again and again. Judging them by their covers they may seem somewhat similar, but in truth they have little in common. Alan Wake is an enjoyable experience with an intersting plot and simple, but solid gameplay mechanics. You're Alan Wake, a succesful author currently suffering from writer's block. Using various sources of light, you must defeat the evil (and quite literal) darkness that has possessed the small town of town of Bright Falls. The game is surprisingly action-packed and while the game mechanics of banishing darkness with light become rather monotonous near the end of the game (somewhat similar to the limb-dismemberment of Dead Space, but much more tedious), they, along with the interesting (if somewhat convoluted) story make this game quite enjoyable. What is much more memorable and commendable than the gameplay and plot, is the atmosphere which throughout the entire game is absolutely astonishing; the juxtaposition between Alan's frustration and the evergrowing darkness around him is well pulled off. Note, however, that this game is labeled as a 'psychological action-thriller', meaning it is not so much a horror game (although it does have a few spooks and eeriee moments), but rather an action game with small puzzles, a good story and the occasional boogeyman.

Controls and partly unfair leveldesign..

.. almost ruined it for me. This game have great atmosphere and graphics (even on intel hd 520). The basic gameplay might lack some variation but is still fine imho. What I didn't like though is that after you've gotten better equipment you start from scratch over and over again. While it might be designed to create a sense of danger, it felt cheap after some time. I play with mouse and keyboard. This sometimes is okay while sometimes feels unnecessarily clumsy. Yes, I understand that "Al" is not your standard military guy... Also the leveldesign sometimes is quite annoying as you tend to have little space crawling with enemies. So might get stucked somewhere or being killed from behind because you can hardly see what's going on. Also there are several checkpoints which force you to watch mini-cutscenes time and again or pick up several items once more. I'm okay with checkpoints and also with using them to make the game more challenging or suspenseful. However in this game I had to do some passages a dozen times or more which in my book doesn't equal fun. Would I still recommend the game? Try it out on sale if you don't mind to probably get annoyed here and there. At least because it is rather a unique game.

Modern version of Dragon Quest

Although it is a thriller shooting game, from the end of the first chapter to the end of the game, my heart is extremely calm As for the perspective mentioned in the comment area, I think there is no problem. This unique perspective is completely prepared for shooting with a flashlight. The story can be seen as a 10-hour thriller detective novel. Although there will be a lot of repetitive operations in the middle and later stages, the good thing is that there is a good shooting feel and the continuous plot dialogue that stimulates my nerves. It's worth playing at a discount

What if Silent Hill were a TV series?

Amazing game, a must play to anyone that is into the horror genre. The only reason I don't give it 5 stars is little enemy variety, in my opinion that's the only con of Alan Wake.

Stephen King and David Lynch had a baby

There are countless bad adaptations including of Stephen King's works. I think it's much more likely that we get strong end results out of this approach, where they attempt to recreate the atmosphere, and not do a direct adaptation of any individual piece of work. This could easily have just settled for references to King and Lynch(there are a number of those, but it isn't limited to that) or surface level stuff, but it dives deep. The game has a killer hook; you really badly want to get to the bottom of the mystery that it presents at the start. And while I won't give away any details I will confirm that I was completely satisfied by the end of it. If you find yourself losing interest in the third level, I urge you to give it until you reach the fourth, where it becomes incredibly interesting again, and remains that way for the rest of it. The gameplay itself is engaging. Essentially it's a third person shooter similar to the first two Max Payne games by the same developer, but without the bullet time and diving, and with a smaller and more limited weapon loadout. In addition to the straightforward point and shoot, you first have to remove the possession from your targets. Sometimes certain things you literally only have to remove the possession. You do this by pointing a flashlight directly at them, and it works especially well if you “focus it” on them(taking time). This slows down (or even stuns, for some) enemies, which leads to you juggling enemies; pointing the light at one, then another, then another, to make sure none of them are able to get close enough to attack. Much like the Max Payne games, this features several incredible standout areas of certain levels, where you're able to do something that makes sense considering what the game has set up. And on one hand you kind of wish the entire game was like that. But on the other you realize it would not sustain an entire game. The atmosphere is amazing. It truly does feel like you're in small town America.
