Too Much, Too Young, Too Fast
Acting Lessons is a visual novel that guides the player through a period of turmoil and new beginnings as Jonas, a young, good-looking crypto millionaire turned early retiree. Jonas is recovering from prior relationships and violent, unfortunate happenstances. The bright spots are the women he meets along the way. The story presents one central romantic character but several romanceable options with deep storylines of their own. Pros + The women are genuinely likable. Perhaps a tad idealistic, but written but appreciable depth and charm. They do feel like people that someone could swiftly fall for. The romantic scenes can be very sweet and memorable + Unpredictable + It’s funny at times + Choices matter. Most choices are meaningful and even if they don’t all change the outcome of the game, they’re at least referenced later on and provide for some realism and agency + Multiple endings + Your fiend, Liam. He's funny and makes the story feel more realistic (as opposed to harem-like stories) + Technically sound. Had no graphic or stability issues. Cons - The traumatic events are overwhelming. This was my biggest problem with the game. The story barely lets itself breathe before slamming another new trauma in your face. Domestic abuse, stalking, armed robbery, adultery, rape, murder, cancer, death of loved ones, arson, police corruption, etc. etc…it only escalates over time and it simply becomes too much. The pacing feels erratic and by the end I was burned out from the endless, persistent, needless, over-the-top trauma - The porn. It’s not good. Each scene is two or three small, animated loops with no sound effects Overall, I enjoyed my time with Acting Lessons and I would recommend nabbing it at the right price for those who enjoy a graphic novel. Don’t buy it for the porn; you’ll be disappointed. Buy it because it’s a decently well-written story with enjoyable characters, cute romantic scenes, funny moments, and packed with excitement.
