Terrible Arcady Single-Player Experience
In short: an arcade-realistic off-road racer with tons of unresolved technical issues and single-player content mostly catering to autists and the people with masochistic tendencies. The "progress" in the game is all about unlocking new cars solely for the sake of unlocking things. There is nothing there to keep you playing. Even when you win, it is often because of good RNG and not because you were particularly good. The game modes are rather silly. Run through generic checkpoint ports. Yeah, it has the Superman 64 style content design. Not very good. Not good at all. It is fun for the five seconds until you realize you cannot stop flipping over and wrecking your car unless you memorize the flat, relatively speeding-safe segments of every single huge map AND drive like an old lady. Driving safe and slow is not really why you buy these games. I recall Monster Truck Madness games were much less fuzzy and more fun games of this genre. +Slightly above-average synth music +Big maps -Invisibile, often non-shaded bumps that will send the supposedly-heavy 4x4 car flying high -You cannot steer with any speed without flipping over -The handling is rubbish, though you have infinite grip as long as you do not steer. -You roll downhill even when braking. -Typical Codemasters steep difficulty curve with the first two sets being somewhat easy and the later three being about unfun map-topography-memorization, manipulating the AI and blind luck, instead, of skill or intent to win. -Breaks if you try to ALT+TAB out of the game. If you do, the game hangs in a way that forces an OS restart as it blocks the screen until it is shutdown. -Very brittle hardware support. If you try to hook the garbage DirectX implementation, it will not find the 3D renderer anymore. Probably did not work back then either. -Rescue i.e. flip-recovery warp is super-slow and unreliable. -Just a couple mistakes usually mean you cannot win the race and wasted your time.
