Fun but extremely short

Copied from my steam review (29 November, 2013): A very fun and enjoyable electronic music-themed platformer. Most levels have rhythm-based obstacles and the difficulty is fine, not hard but not easy either. The few boss fights this game has are very well-executed and great fun to beat and the soundtrack is nice. Unfortunately 140 is extremely short and took only an hour to beat (that's with mistakes too) and while it does have a "hard" mode unlocked after completion, (flipping all the levels to progress to the left instead of to the right and no checkpoints) I don't think I'll be playing that part as I've already seen everything the game has to offer. Overall it's ok for the price (1-2 USD on sale on steam) and I'm glad to have played it despite its length.

Platform to the beat

140 beats per minute to platform through a stylish geodesic landscape. Well executed, entertaining, and often clever, 140 has a solid 90-120 minutes of platforming. Two out of the three "boss" sections are weak, but I was happy to overlook those since I was having so much fun jumping through obstacles to the beat. And then it was over. There's some bonus stages, but you can put this game to bed in the time it takes for viagra to kick in. What gameplay that's there is good, but there could be so much more kickass techno platforming. 90 beats out of 140.

2D cousin of Rez

140 is a game that values your time and avoids filler content. In the time it will take you to finish all its levels, this game will show you a plethora of platforming gameplay mechanics, while making excellent use of its minimalistic graphics and synesthetic, mutating soundtrack. Sound and gameplay elements go hand in hand: rhythm is synchronised with moving platforms, disappearing hazards, and a lot more. Buy 140 if you like: - Games that make the most of what they have - No filler - Electronic music - Slick flat graphics - Tight controls - A bit of a challenge

Short, but Unforgettable

This is a Rhythm-Based Platformer, which didn't make sense to me at first, but once I saw it in motion, I began to grasp what that meant. While your motion doesn't have anything inherently to do with the rhythm of the music, how the stage moves and operates entirely does. What's interesting is how this is used; in the first stage, you're trained to move completely with the rhythm, but in the second, you're taught to step back from it and use it to your advantage. There are only 4 stages, but each has its own gimmicks; rarely, if ever, are any repeated from one stage to the next. There are also boss fights, most of which function completely differently from each other. In fact, one of them was less a matter of reflex, and more a matter of math and logistics. I've heard many say that this game is very hard, but I disagree; if anything, it's what I call modern hard: brutal in short bursts, but carpet-bombed with checkpoints, and you have unlimited lives. Even still, I wouldn't say that it's all that hard. That is, of course, unless you're playing Mirror Mode, which has no checkpoints at all. The real draw, to me, is the visual style, which is like a psychedelic rainbow explosion right out of the 1970s, an artstyle that I absolutely adore! Your mileage may vary, but if you've seen anything of this game, and like the visuals, then you're likely to enjoy them. Color combinations are occasionally a little unorthodox, but the game always makes it work. The music is pleasant, and heavily electronic, and smartly makes you aware of it, since you have to pay attention to understand how the stage works and how to proceed. In all, everything works very well together, and with the creator's apparent vision for the game.

Decent, but don't buy at full price

After finishing 140 in just under 45 minutes, I felt I had gotten my 99 cents' worth from buying the game on sale but nothing more. Gameplay mostly revolves around platforming, with various obstacles appearing, disappearing, or moving to the beat. While the game does a good job of explaining each of the "rules" of every unique element through gameplay, almost all of them boil down to "stand still for a few seconds until it's safe to move again." It doesn't help that this game can demand highly precise movement at times, but the controller bindings only support the analog stick for (binary start/stop) movement and not the d-pad. There are three "boss" challenges that break up the platforming segments; I found the first to be trial-and-error and the second to be far too easy, but the third one was engaging and required mastery of both the visuals and rhythm. If you have a dollar to spend and want a decent platformer experience with a neat "final boss," 140 might be for you, but don't expect craft on the level of something like Sound Shapes. If the game isn't on sale, I can't recommend it either since there's not much content-wise.
