I have been a regular to this site for some years now. I come here solely for old and somewhat forgotten games. I love how the list of games just keep growing and hope to get that "wow, they also has this one now"-feeling.
Its abit like opening a birthday present coming here every fourtnight to check whats new.
Please continue to add the old games to your catalogue. You beat everyone else in that area by a huge margin
New and Old games are what make GoG great.... don't ever change.
GOG is starting to be the "hipster" of the game sellers/distributors with all the independent games their selling. Nobody likes a hipster...
GOG will always be Good Old Games for me and the old games is why I'm here. If I want crappy indie games there are lots of other places on the net I can go to.
More golden oldies from Microprose! not enough old Microprose classics here - Task Force 1942, 1942 Pacific Air War Gold, M1 Tank Platoon 1 and 2, Gunship 2000 , Fields of Glory. F117a 2.0, Red Storm Rising - the list is endless. F15 Strike Eagle 2 and 3
Microprose were innovative with often quite dynamic game play with their sims and strategy games -
Witcher series are an exception to some degree, since they are created by GOG parental company. GOG should attract more major modern games developers. But common obsession with DRM can prevent that to a degree, so we should hope this is changing.
I'm glad they release newer games as well such as The Witcher 2, I want all the PC games I buy to be completely DRM free. I would like to see more of the new releases to be honest, though I very much appreciate and love the older games.
@GregBergerson: Many old Windows games are perfectly playable on modern systems. That is on Linux with Wine ;) Just set the mode to the proper Windows version there. Give it a try.
I love to see some more of the OLD games from the DOS / Early Windows days that just dont run on current systems, like 7 Cities of Gold and Machiavelli the Prince - These are now Abandon Ware they are so old, would be great to see them get a facelift to play on the modern systems!
I think people may have ask for t his game, i would like to have Privateer 2 The darkening, i have it original but not try it yet on XP or W7. I have read about crashes with the sound. I dont know them for now. I will try on the next weeks if it works.
As long is GOG is adding new games AND old games to its list I'm a happy costumer. Besides DRM free games should be encouraged more and more because it does not punish people who want to enjoy a purchased product to the fullest.
Plus people should understand that selling titles (even old titles) isn't that easy. They have to be careful with the developers' and publisher's rights. Not a lot of publishers are happy with DRM free content.
Surely, GOG shouldn't stop looking for old titles to add to the catalog at the same time, while there are some still to find.
I agree with @TheIRS. Keeping "old" games as perpetual priority won't work forever. So GOG needs to focus on new games as well, and I'd say it should be an equal priority for GOG to remain competitive and even to challenge bigger services like Steam. In the end, DRM free aspect will be the key differentiating factor for GOG.
yeah, old shouldn't point to some certain ageness, how old a game should or shouldn't be... 'cos internet is full of people who can't never agree on what is old anyway... for someone maniac mansion commodore 64 version is old, to some it's morrowind, some would say pong is old... :)
I think the name still fits as they expand into newer titles. The phrase "good old..." doesn't specifically refer to age. It's a euphemism that means nice, or an expresses of fondness. A person can say "good old video games" and mean that games are good altogether. It carries a double meaning in "Good Old Games" because they started out selling old titles, but it doesn't preclude them using it now. Plus, GOG is synonymous with DRM-free. No sense in wasting a good name over semantics.
Even with the variety of old releases GOG can still potentially obtain, they can only reach back so far before they've released pretty much every old game people will more than likely want to play. This doesn't mean I disagree with the notion of finding more at all, I just know and understand this can't keep the same forever. Besides, they've at least generally been careful with newer releases (granted, I found a couple of choices odd, like Alan Wake and its DLC), and they are certainly keeping to the DRM free philosophy regardless of what they bring, which I consider more important anyway (they can always change their name if they need to anyway).
While I'd definitely like to congratulate GOG on an already amazing catalog, I get the feeling that the store is slowly deviating itself from the oldies, and concentrating more on the newies. If this is the case I must urge them not to forget its good OLD roots. I cannot stress this enough, as there are still tons of important gaming gems that rely solely on GOG to see the light again. And that's why most of us are here for!
Stretching the interpretation of Good old games is not an issue for me. To me it could mean games played on a PC, my first self owned platform.
However, modern games on GOG are to attract a mixed crowd, so my only request is that the fora don't get littered with "go play COD" style conversations.
I have to admit that I spend more time reading the nostalgia filled retrospect reviews on GOG than I play the actual games :D
I come for DRM-free games mostly. At first being able to buy *good* old games was equally important, but now most of the best (or just famous) classic games are either already here (and bought:), or lost in IP hell like System Shock 2 used to be, so I'm all for then adding *good* DRM-free indie games, while any newly added classic is just bonus
I agree. ....while I love and am happy to see & try newer games as well, being able to play old classics again is part of why I chose to join this site. :)
For those interested in the Humongous Entertainment games, I'm gathering support in this thread. Consider posting there if you'd buy the games if they came to GOG. :) http://www.gog.com/forum/general/humongous_entertainment_support_thread
We do need more old games that aren't readily available on other sites, client or no client (I... am actually willing to put up with DRM! *shock and awe*). Like, say, Rainbow Six 2: Rogue Spear. Or the first System Shock (I personally don't really care for it, but there are plenty of people that do). Or Empires: Dawn of the Modern World.
I agree, most of us are here for the same reason - bring us the older games, the difficult to find games, and the games from our youth.
The reason for me being on this site is the good old game Stonekeep.. I remembered it from my good old gaming days and so I went looking on the internet for it,And Lo and Behold: Here on GOG I found it :D ... been here ever since :)
Agreed. The beauty of this site is being able to play old games that we could not play otherwise.
I Love this site, I come here for the DRM good old games! It's amazing how many I've bought over the last few months since finding GOG. Microprose's Magic the Gathering would be awesome to see as well, I loved that game back then. I don't mind newer games, but probably won't buy them. No Steam here, GOG all the way.
Microprose's Magic the Gathering...thank you, carry on
Nobunaga's Ambition 2. Very simple graphics, but surprisingly deep game play. A Kou Shibabatsu (I think that's the name) masterpiece.
How about Delta Force another great game lost
Hey, the good old Doom games and Quake aswell would be super awesome! Maybe some of the early GTA games, or the old version of the Death Rally game. Just a couple of suggestions.
I come here so i can play games from the 1990's, or very early 2000's that i never go around to playing because i was too busy with school. I don't mind that newer games are released as long as they make available games that are indeed good, and "old" that are no longer available by traditional means. like the Journeyman project, planescape, etc.
I think GOG doesn't intend to stay in the niche and they are looking to be a universal games distributor. It doesn't mean they'll stop adding old games, but I expect more and more new games to appear here.
I can understand the move towards including newer games from a business standpoint. However, GOG's niche is still that you can get classic games of the past that work on your modern-day PC. The lack of DRM is by no means a poor second (DRM all but killed my old laptop - didn't have the skills to fix it) as DRM is very unpopular, to be Cpt. Obvious there.
I'd like they could get their hands on a GOG version of Star Wars Rogue Squadron :).
I come here for good games without DRM. Both old (because there is a lot of *good* old games) and not so old. The number of old games has not decreased so you can call GOG as "Good Old Games".
If anybody reads this, please post whether you come here for the old games or the DRM-free, or both. I'm genuinely interested...
I come to GOG because it's DRM free - I don't use steam. So I'm for them adding any kind of games! Old, new, different platforms and etc. The more the merrier.
I too, come to GOG for the old games, like many others I normaly buy my new games on Steam. I would like to see Mechwarrior 2, 3 and possibly 4 on GOG, I would buy them in a heartbeat. Another old favourite of mine is Great Naval Battles of the North Atlantic, a SSI release that pushed the dos envelope to the max but was a great game.
I'm all for them selling newer games if it supports the site, but old games are the reason I came here and I hope that GOG will continue to help me relive my youth!
Do people not realise they release a classic game every Tuesday?
i'm with Alenonimo on this, in my case i like a lot of new games too, since i want to support the gog effort and a way to do that is by buying new releases from them aswell. and if that allows them to continue their great effort to keep old games from disapearing, i'm all in!. and hey they just released system shock 2!
I would love to see Megaman Legends one and two on here is that is possible.
I don't mind the new games. Just don't stop bringing the old ones too. :D
This was a concern I had when they first moved over to incorporating new games into their lists. I don't have a problem with new releases, but it seems like older games are getting shoved by the wayside in favor of indie and other AAA releases. My main draw, back when GOG was just starting out (back when you had to have an invitation?) was access to these awesome old games and it feels like that niche isn't being serviced as much anymore. The rumor for System Shock 2 tempers my disappointment, but since it's just a rumor, I can't put 100% faith in it.
The *OLD* games are what makes this website special. Its the reason I buy my modern games here. Because it is my way of hoping you will continue to bring my favorite old games. Specifically my favorite which are adventure games. I would give almost anything to play Hand of Fate, (Kyrandia Series) again!
I second for putting Wizardry games on GoG, eight is my personal favorite
I'd love to see the Wizardry series on GOG. I'm surprised that they haven't added any of the Wizardry games yet.
GOG stands for Good OLD Games, new games can be found on Steam, in some random store, or simply at your friends house. OLD games however, are an endangered species: simply because nobody who plays COD3 will want to play Tyrian 2000, and also because the new operating systems are devastating the habitats that old games run in. Conserve the OLD; continue to obtain sales rights for the old games, continue to port their compatibility over to winXP/win7/win8/and beyond.
Agreed, more older games would be nice.
I also would love to see a good old game every now and then, they seem to have become a rare sight on this site. Please, do not forget your roots, GoG.com. Nothing against new indie releases but it pains me to see the older games suffer at their expense. There are literally hundreds, maybe even thousands of good, old games waiting to be released out there.
