Beat Steam, Work with WINE to make all windows games work on Linux (and work well)
Valve's contributions to Wine through the proton fork benefits us GOG users as well. I don't think CDP could do it any better or why it would even be necessary. A native proper version of Galaxy with a wrapper for Wine would be nice though -- even though I'm satisfied filling that void with Lutris.
Since Proton is open source they could just implement valve's tech for windows only games and allow us to install the native linux games either with a GOG client or linux installers
Definitely!! I've been a windows user since Win 3.1, but lately I boot Linux way more than windows. I also use the Raspberry Pi SBC more than windows too.
Would be great to see gog support linux more like steam, I support gog were I can because of the DRM free philosophy, but I've been thinking of going back to steam ever since they started heavily investing in proton/wine.
Although I totally agree it would be great to see GOG working with Wine to provide more support for WIndows-only games to run well on Linux.
@LinuxFire: no, Wine is not an emulator. In fact, that is exactly what the acronym stands for. It is merely a software compatibility layer, it does not emulate any hardware. I find that most modern Windows games play very well through Wine and give great performance.
Just drop Ubuntu and make instead GOG OS
Proton is open source as well. If the GOGclient is released for linux it shouldnt be a huge problem using proton as well. Getting the games to be native is better though but..
More linux support would be awesome
Wine is not a real solution, it’s just a Windows emulator, like FS-UAE for Amiga.
it will be much better if the games used OpenGL, to be multi-platform!
it’s just a personal opinion.
Thanks to caetydid for are work
Actually I started working on "Dolmades" an open source project which intends to solve exactly what is demanded here. Please have a look at my initial post and the project itself - I'd be thrilled to receive feedback but please use the original posting: www.gog.com/forum/general/dolmades_v10_the_goglizer_released
Flatout's "Linux" installer includes a custom-made wine-1.6 prefix. It has some pretty serious graphical issues when run on AMD Tonga + AMDGPU drivers, but behaves perfectly on more recent versions.
+1. However Steam seems to be getting more cross-platform than most as it works on Windows & Android, I can also launch it on Linux., but i do agree GOG launcher on Linux would be nice (if not done already).
I do agree with your main point in a way tough as many games/programs get made only for Windows & Mac, iv never once seen a Linux game/program in a shop.
I think that Wine/Cedega/GameTree are great programs and if they could get some extra funding to push progress into a better state then i am all for it, however over many years i have noticed that Wine dev team seem very slow at 'working-round', patching or fixing reported bugs in games/programs which is disappointing & im unsure more money would help the matter.. it may make them even slower.
Also getting something to run 'well' depends on the device you are using (ram, graphics card, cores, drivers (in some cases) and not to often even HDD speed/type, etc).
anyway.. i am all for getting Wine in a better state or native Linux ports of games/programs.
I'd frankly be happy with a wrapper as long as it actually works generically. But yeah; native is always better.
Please restrict this for titles that have no plans for a Linux port. Native is still the best. You have my vote, but please implement this restriction to avoid developers getting lazy and not releasing any real ports instead of wrappers anymore.
Ich haätt lieber ReactOs-Support ansatt WINE-Support. ReactOS kann DOS und Win-Spiele gleichermaßen starten. Es ist auch besser anpassbar insb. für Spiele-Bugs. Siehe auch Link unten....
I would love to see ReactOS support even more to have WINE support. ReactOS handles DOS and Win-Games natively. And ReactOS could be better customized for games (handling game bugs). See also this request...

I prefer native over wine, even though I could get most games I tried to work with wine. It should still be a last resort IMHO.
Why are people whining on Wine!? It's the best way to run old Windows games! The compatibility modes in Windows rarely works. And when it does, the game might crash or have graphical glitches.
I've never had this with Wine.
But all games won't come to GOG, as their greedy publishers won't allow it. At least not without their DRM systems.
First we would have to free game development companies and their games from publishers...
Concerning Wine again: it's an open source project, without enough support! You can't expect it to work magically for everything! It just needs more time and active developers, and developers with new ideas.
This would be great, the wine team often helps with ports, and having a massive Linux library would bring more Linux users purchases to GOG. Native is awesome, but always possible, and this would be a greatly appreciated second option.
There will be soon implemented D3D API into linux so it all might be much easier.
With all due respect to the technical prowess of Wine, NO F-ING WAY! Native port or nothing!
No, Wine is aweful software. Wine does not help Linux!
No, to force users to use Wine is not a good idea at all, Wine is not stable enough to be used instead of Windows itself so no. I don't agree. Native or nothing
How does this beat Steam? This would mean Steam beats GOG since Steam would have all the actual Linux games.
For what it's worth, the community and the forum staff are already pretty good at accomplishing this. I got help from an official GoG rep in getting STALKER CoP working under wine. Most of my collection just runs without any issues.
another alternative which combines FOSS and even better windows compatibility www.gog.com/wishlist/site/add_reactos_as_third_supported_platform_and_free_and_open_source_option
How would they be the first cross platform market when both Desura and Steam have provided cross platform for a good while already? If you mean all games it's highly unlikely, since it would either require native ports for all games or wine skins. And while I'm not sure, I assume there are at least a few games on GOG which use DX11. Still, it's a nice dream, and I've upvoted the request.
while nicer formulated, a similar wish already exist: www.gog.com/wishlist/site/wine_as_a_supported_platform
