Jim wasn't always a studly super-worm. He was once just a spineless, dirt-eater with no real mission in his life...

But then something unexpected happened. The evil Psy-Crow was transporting a super suit, built by the genius Professor Monkey-For-A-Head, to Queen Pulsating, Bloated, Festering, Sweaty, Pus-Filled, Malformed, Slug-For-A-Butt, but along the way it was stolen by a rebel. Although Psy-Crow killed the rebel, the suit fell down to Earth, landing on an Earth Worm. That cosmic twist of fate placed Jim in control of an ultra-high-tech-indestructible-super-space-cyber-suit.

Anyway, Earthworm Jim found out that Princess What's-Her-Name had been captured and set out to save her. Meanwhile, there's a bounty on Jimmy and plenty of people are in line to take Queen Slug-For-A-Butt up on her offer.

Now Jim must make it to the princess and stay clear of Psy-Crow, the intergalactic bounty hunter, until the final battle with Queen Slug-For-A-Butt. To accomplish this, you'll have to use every weapon and ability at your disposal to wriggle your way through dozens of original and just plain weird levels.

The best of the platformers

Posted on 2008-10-07 16:24:32 byantihippie's avatarantihippie:

Earthworm Jim really demonstrates what can be done with the 2d platform genre. The game is loaded with style, bizarre humor and fun. Level design is masterful. Each level varies considerably, and the landscape has a very organic form to it.
What is truly great about Earthworm Jim however, is that all of the parts mesh so well. The style never subtracts from the substance ofread more the gameplay. The game puzzles and obsticles rarely feel cheap or forced. The humor is real, without being too ridiculous. The music and effects complement the style and never take away from the overall picture. Those of you who have played the disappointing Earthworm Jim 3d, the only thing I can say is go back and take another look at the original platformers. You'll be pleasantly surprised.

Two great games make one amazing bundle.

Though not revolutionary for their time, the Earthworm Jim games provided a solid platforming experience with a heavy dose of personality, enough that managed to spawn a successful animated series, a toy line, and a(somewhat dissapointing) 3rd game in the series, as well as more recent ports to the Gameboy Advance.
The basic mechanics of Earthworm Jim are a combination of platformersread more and shooters, with an emphasis on the platforming aspect. Jim has a wide array of weaponry available to him with various effects, from simple things like the essential tri-beam spread shot type weapons, to more outlandish things like the Barn Blaster, which has incredibly limited ammo and can one-shot every enemy on screen at the same time.
However, the games frequently deviate from the typical levels and keep things interesting, introducing minigames or vastly different mechanics to deal with. At times, these can be frustrating to players(especially in the first game), but they keep the game interesting when it could have otherwise begun to slip into monotony.
The PC versions are widely considered an improvement on the console versions of the EWJ games, having higher quality music and additional content that goes beyond adding an extra level or weapon here or there. Even if you've got the original games on the Super Nintendo or the Sega Genesis, it's worth getting them on the PC for the low price offers.
With the franchise poised to be revived through not only a new game, but a new animated series and potential movie, now is as good a time as any to get the original Earthworm Jim games, and relive some classic and humor-filled gaming of the 16-bit era.
