So as I saw this game was on the GoG sale I decided to take a punt and purchase (as I used to own the original disc version but why not get a digital version + Expansion for cheap!)

Anyway.. Like a few other posts I have seen on these forums I am also plagued with issues..

Initially I was receiving the Not Enough Memory crash on the first mission at random points - searching the internet and doing random fixes seemed to resolve that..

Now I am past mission 1 (fall of Berlin) and playing the Seattle mission the game will freeze at random points during the mission, no black screen and no CTD - I can still hear the game but I can't do anything else but task manager close..

I also cannot turn on DX10 to see if that resolves anything because when I turn on and restart the option is turned off again.

So far I have tried:

XP Compatiblity mode (SP3 & 2)
Run as Admin
-stabilityfactor 10 (whatever that is.. saw it on a steam post)
Providing full access to the "Documents\WiC folder"
turning off Anisotripic Filtering (as suggested on another post I found)
Turning off Bloom (same as above)
game runs in DX9 because I can't turn DX10 on so it isnt that issue.

If anyone has any other ideas they are welcome.. but it would be nice to be able to play through this game again without issue.

Running Windows 10 Pro x64
12gb RAM
R9 280x 3gb
Intel Xeon W3680
I have exactly the same problem. Did you find any solution yet? I am out of ideas :(
same issue :(
Same issue here. Seems that this is a common error and nobody can do anything about it. This truly is very sad...
Same problem here
Setting the Graphics options to low just for the period of time when it would be crashing fixed it for me. After the mission I turned it back to high.
I found the fix on a steam forum. This fix is for any old game that might have a similar out of memory error and crash. It makes your executable.exe be able to access more than 2GB of memory.

(I can't post links?)

Go to moddb dot com/downloads/large-address-aware1

The link talks about sins of solar empire but like I said it will work for other .exe

Thank you
;)
This is funny, because I bought the game today on GOG in order to use that fix, the large adress aware. I already owned the game on Steam, but this tool doesn't work on the Steam version. I apply the fix and the game cannot start.

I was betting on it to work with the GOG version because there is no DRM, and low and behold it does.

This is such a great game, I never actually got to finish it back when it was new and am looking forward to another run. :)

I know it's an old post but this really helped me out. Thanks
If you're like me and don't want to download random executables from the internet, you can also do this with the editbin tool that is included in Microsoft's VisualStudio. It's just a matter of running editbin /LARGEADDRESSAWARE wic.exe
Hmm... Is that possible to apply dynamic fix - applied in memory as compatibily? i know about this fix long time, first time even before Win8 (entirely new in Win family, worse dealing with memory/keep background apps as mobile do - backported from mobiles).

But now thought cross mi mind - i guess LARGEADRESSAWARE can be applied as compatibility option. That mean it can be used in Ms Application Compatibility Toolkit. Or maybe even directly to exe file by Windows REGEDIT section. May be... Maybe may not. Ms ACT tool need anyway to check if there is such comp. option there. If it isnt there - Windows itself without tool didnt support this as well.

If it is there - that mean no need to make manual/half-automatic changes to exe or dll file. So it is increase compatibility in differ OS (it is Win Vista game initially no need to increase support, no fix for it and no need for Win XP and most likely wasnt supported in XP - but apply fix as compatibility for Win8+ OS family to increase support for this OS keep Vista/XP) and make better compatibilities in LAN/Internet between players. Technically sometimes differ exe and dll files not always make game versions differ. But still to avoid issues better everyone have 1to1 exact files (and same OS increase network compatibility too, in OS in g3neral and in games).
More some tweaks made for each player own builds more chances for increasing de-synch in match time. LAA fix too.

And that allow play games without additional 3rd party files downloading.

Initially that tool made for apps on WinVista(/7) and x64 OS. But even older apps already updated or initially made for Vista x64 no more properly work with RAM on Win8+. Ofc more correct to say it is OS no more properly work with memory. First off all apps work as OS do, any platform/device. Especially with memory. Nowadays even games from Late '00s need LAA fix to reduce memory issues of Win10/11. After all, Windows 8+ entirely new OS'es. Still Ms can make better job.

Also win 8+ lost DisableThemes DisableDesktopThemes and DisableDWM along with DisableAero while it is only Aero that not included in new Windows'es. Other ones still applied. Can be applied by manual Win REGEDIT editing or Ms ACT.

As finale-finale conclusion. If its cab ne compatible option thing - we can set to one general Launcher exe (steam.exe/galaxy.exe) add all games as links to it and start directly from Launcher. All compatibilities, Core Affinity, Priority, and ADMINRUN mode come to all daughter process automatically.
LARGEADRESSAWARE DISABLETHEMES DISABLEDESKTOPTHEMES DISABLEDWM DISABLEAERO (WinVista/7 only), DISABLEFULLSCREENOPTIMISATION DISABLENX (of whatever it called) and maybe Lower Priority (not Higher) optional - are all mandatory needed so can applied to one exe. Game specific exe's for some game specific compatibilities. Some Win9x games require Windows ME comp mode. But they are very rare. Do not use it without reel need and with other possible solutions.

Those mandoty options still can be used with any fix/mod- wrappers like GOG's DX Wrapper (DXCFG). More specific compatibilities with wrappers should be turned back off.

ADMINRUN is not mandatory but needed time to time. If you dont want keep in mind ADMINRUN - better also add it to galaxy.exe/steam.exe Properties.

I do use GOG Galaxy as launcher for 3rd party and GOG (offline) versions.

Another such Launcher can be used is DxWnd Wrapper. It is same tool nowadays as Ms ACT. Some tweaks applied automatically in DxWnd when you add new exe to it so be careful with exe properties there. As a wrapper it is too complicated tool and sometimes too much randomly working. As wrapper better keep it for AudioCD Music games (it have old Windows AudioCD volume control). As Launcher it is fully offline and DRM-free alternative to GOG Galaxy.
For DirectX compatibilities better use separate most simplest wrappers.
The game has problems when you are running it above HD resolutions. You need to make sure you apply the Large Address Aware patch to the exe file to allow the game to use more then 4GB of memory.

Also people with high core counts tend to experience random crashes to desktop.

http://download.wicmwmod.com/support/wicdbg_gt16_core.zip

The link above allows the game to utilise CPUs with more then 6 cores. Simply extract the dll files into the games main directory (where the WIC.exe file is).

After doing these I haven't had a single crash in the game.
Tried a lot of these fixes. Tried the LAA fix, game wont start up. Copied the wicdbg_gt16 core files in, game starts up but crashes with the not enough memory error during gameplay and cutscenes at different times. Turned of DX10 in options, ran compatibility for vista, nothing seems to be a good fix for me. Im running Windows 11, 16 gig ram, intel i7, RTX 3080 Ti
Game ran fine but would crash after first mission with not enough memory error. Tried the Large Address Aware fix but now the game wont even launch now. Any solutions to this?
