Hello!

If you are considering which version to buy, don't bother with Battle.net. The GoG version is better. The only advantage the Battle.net version has is you get to skip the setup screen.

Every time I open Bnet version I need to alt+enter to make it full screen. The game runs slow in spite of me turning it up to "fastest" in the options. In the Bnet version the sound options are chosen for you. The GoG version even looks superior. The colours on Bnet version are washed out, for some reason.

Edit: something I forgot to add regarding the Battle.net version...where's the soundtrack? Where's the manual? Battle.net version doesn't give you any of these.

Edit 2: I *think* GoG is also higher res, but the game doesn't allow for changing resolution, so I don't know for sure.

UPD2: It is a Wiki not 100% accurate. But Apple Gaming Wiki and PCGamingWiki is a good place to visit. And all their or linked websites there.
I guess main page and Troubleshooting guide links not needed here and now. So here reference links just for DosBox and GOG DosBlx launchers/Wc1

..more to come, i need Internet Archive cause of Wiki activist make typical wiki-activities (deleting), stupidity...

(GOG forum broken, carefully copy-paste links to open them)

The main info link you need is DosBox article. It allow you set game identical in GOG and Bnet builds.

............
(UPD: No. Very first of - for Steam, GOG-Galaxy, Bnet or whatever - make afterinstall verify game files in game properties in clients Library. At least twive in a row since usually there is no "100% check pass" for all of gaming clients. Use Run As Admin mode for gaming clients and start games DIRECTLY from Launchers. Start in Admin to start game in Admin to finish installation or verification. Any even DosBox settings feedling only after verify all files are correct...

... Of course its much easier for GOG build (offline) than for GOG-Galaxy or Bnet builds. Check setup digital signature validated, set on ✅ checkmark in Setup to validate setup files. And if installed with no errors - no need to validate post-install. Unlike downloading online gaming or torrent clients.)
(for most users RUNASADMIN set to steam/galaxy/etc exe Properties is best to keep ON permanent. Again start games only DIRECTLY from Libraries, forget about Desktop links).

Stat GOG (offline) build by Start Menu GOG - Settings Link. Its actualy a Launcher, not just settings file. Replace Desktop link.
...........
First of enable file extenstions visibility in Windows Folders Explorer settings to see bat/exe/cfg in files)

(Usually for GOG/ZOOM better to manually update DosBox from of.site, even with fact GOG use own build and it have own good features... more better to use Windows builds GOG rarely provide)

(usually.. emm ALWAYS Win-build are better than DOS. Warcraft 1 did not have such shperior version. Wc1 CD-rom rerelease did have Apple Mac version instead as main-superior version and DOS as addition one. Eo Mac version better and have better visuals - but it is Mac version. It is another emulation way, alternate...
so lets keep it GOG version "As is" for included files. But what about Bnet edition? Did it use GOGs DosBox called DosBox_CS and did it have cloud_saves folder there?)

You are a bit... how to say in Eng... fast to judge. If you dont know.

Whatever release. You must manually edit dosbox_conf file inside. There is wrong mistaken default settings for both DosBox itself and GOGs variants of all dosbox-bundled releases here.

GOG version have own pre-launcher. GOGDOSBOXLauncher exe. But gog use not this one exe to start the games in dosbox releases. But they do add this Link file to the Start Menu - Apps - GOG section. Replace desktop ones to this one.

This prelauncher have few options to edit. But one more "but". This time its specific for Warcraft 1 release. GOG did use very outdated launcher somehow. There is just few options. No even resolution. And they fix it for their Mac build update that GOGDOSBOXLauncher file. Not for Windows build.
Also this pre-Launcher have options menu to start Multiplayer session (some changes to dosbox conf file for starting emulation process before game launched).

And yet. Even with this Launcher you must manually doublecheck and edit dosbox_conf.

First of make sure "cycles" is set to auto. And change switchers gradation. They set to 10k as i remember even in default file, set them to 500 or 1000.
Sift+F11/F12 or some else buttons are increase/decrease cycles in case if game work too fast/slow/junky. X-com 1 in dos variant reauire changing cycles for Globus-map and battle-maps.

Double check Keep Aspect ratio is enabled. Render is set to OpenGL or something except software/d3d. With that you can set Fullscreen or Exclusive Fullscreen and any* resolution (doublecheck its supported proportions for your display or set your display native one resolution). For GOG release, again, the only way change resolution is manually edit fonf file although other releases include Mac Wc1 here have pre-Launcher options for that.

Battle.net provide manual files. Somewhere should be. Although it maybe hided very deep in Battle.net or Battlenet Support websites. Warcraft 2 BNE (and D1?) manual always be there, Wc1 and Diablo 1 manuals and some else doc files published there resently.

Cant say for music. Again need to be double check it did it a real exclusion of music files or some settings issue or some your specific issue.
First of is there is disc image or something looks like that? Again look to dosbox_fonf file. There is list of other fonf files used to execute the game. And this files placed near first one. They all have _conf in their names.
In all 5his files should be mount disc image command.

Music should be played without disc for Warcraft 1 DOS (as Midi).

Font have first Launcher and second DOS-based post-Launcher make Bnet release really worse. And make it harder to set SOUND settings which is probably the issue for Bnet release do not play Midi.
For GOG version you can move SETSOUND.EXE file or Link to it onto near dosbox.exe file or link to it. If you have system DosBox from of.site you must have dosbox_fonf file additional settings to mount C/ drive and etc. For build-in DosBox you are good just move Link file to Link file.

Try it now for Bnet. Move SETSOUND link onto buildin DosBox.exe (or link of it create specific for that move). Chose some default settings. They should be enough for DoxBox.

Another disadvatnage. ALL that EA App Origin, Steam, Ubi Uplay, Battlenet releases based on GOG(/ZOOM/some else). But same as lack some features prelaunchers or replace them, they also always use default FosBox while GOG have a bit forked variant set to store afterlaucnh generated files (settings+saves) in separate cloud_saves folder. Even for their releases without CloudSaves support. Make it one specific folder is better.

Did Battlenet use GOGs DosBox_CS? Even based on GOG - Steam releses even with GOGs leftovers incl even their GOG DX Wrapper (not supposed to be shared outside of GOG builds) sometimes some changes are made on Steam.
There is no GOGs DosBox fork variant on Steam or Origin. I doubt it is on Bnet. Check it.

Why im ask that? Maybe better manually update-replace DosBox on Battlenet to official website build? And you need reset dosbox_fonf file after that (kepp backup to see how game set to be launch).
I recommend do same for most of GOG releases. Not necessary for Wc1.
