I loved enemy unknown but i always wondered was there another ufo xcom game that came close as 1? or did the franchise die after xcom apocalypse wich i liked ok not as much as enemy unknown.

It's hard to say whether UFO Aftermath is as good, since despite its reputation it's pretty much a different game. Different goals, which inform gameplay and scenario, means different style. There's clear inspiration.

what i loved about the original is that you could gave the soldiers there own names so you wanted to protect that soldier but the one you wanted to stay alive and the weaker one ending up surviving all the battles

This is also possible in UFO: Aftermath. On the squad screen there's an option to change their nicknames.
