My laptop has an AMD Phenom II N620 Dual Core 2.80GHz with 4 gigs of RAM, Windows 7 64-bit. My graphics card is an AMD M880G Chipset with ATI Radeon™ HD 4250. When I attempt to start Tropico 3, I get a critical error saying "You need a supported DX9-compatible video card with a recent driver to play this game. Check our web site for a list of supported chipsets." On the website, the minimum requirement is a Geforce 6 Series, ATI X1300. Am I mistaken, or am I fulfilling the requirements?

If I'm not mistaken that is a DX10 chip so you are fulfilling the requirement. There might however be an issue with how the game detects and treats your video chip which could be a driver, DX or, hopefully not laptop chipset, problem.

Things to do:
1 - Update drivers.
2 - Update DirectX.
3 - Check "Disable Display scaling on high DPI settings" on the compatibility tab for 'Tropico3.exe'.
4 - Delete the shader cache. I think this on is more for if you have had the game running and it stop and complains about DX9 on a card that used to work. Anyway the command is 'rmdir /S /Q "%appdata%\Tropico 3\ShaderCache"'.

Hope it helps.

If you're using a second monitor you might try disabling it and see if that solves the problem. I can run the game with both my monitors active but I have a newer AMD chipset and I'm using the 32 bit version of Win 7

I can run both The Witcher and World in Conflict without serious issue (aside from overheating, but that's a different story altogether). I checked the box in compatibility. I've installed the latest drivers and directx. I attempted to run that command, but it said that I typed it in wrong. I'm extremely confused.
I have the same problem - but when I try to run Tropico 3, I get a hidden critical error (which I have to use End Task in the task manager to clear), after which I'm directed to the Haemimont website.

I'm using a laptop which runs all my other DX9 games that I've got with no problems. I also have up to date drivers.

But I have an ATI Radeon HD3200 and maybe it's Radeons which are the problem.

I'm going to check out the website I'm directed to and see if it's a common problem...

It looked like Haemimont's forums were down. This is definitely pretty disconcerting.
The game runs fine on my Radeon HD 6870

The problem is more likely related to the 4250 and 3200 using shared memory

One of the classic Solutions is, if You are using Windows 7, to delete UserConfig2.lua file wich is found in the

c:\documents and settings\ *your windows account username here* \appdata\roaming\tropico 3,

You will have to set appdata folder visible in folder options - view - show all possible hidden files you can find there.

And your game will start in no time;
However, with this particular release ( as in GOG ) will ask for the serial-key which is stored in this particular file.
And since this release comes without a serial the user is equally buggered.

The above mentioned solution worked well on the boxed counterpart of the game. And was one of the only reliable ways to get the game running with that kind of error.

Yeah, still kinda useless info!

I got a serial when I bought it (on GOG) but I haven't been asked to enter it yet.

Did you omit the apostrophes at the beginning and the end?

i was hoping to find the solution here... oh well.

i have the same issue. fairly new dell laptop, with a radeon 4650 on it.

when i run it from my laptop, i get the error specified in this thread.

but, when i connect my hdmi out, displaying on my regular screen, then it works just fine.

thought that might help...

edit:
what the hell am i saying! lol. the hdmi thing worked while i had the bug. but deleting the .lua file fixed it all. :)

Yep, deleting UserConfig2.lua worked perfectly.
Like I said this worked charms on the Boxed Version...glad it still works.

I too was getting this problem while I had Tropico installed on my laptop.

Thank you so much... I had the same problem and this fix it... The serial was in my games collection in the Tropico tab.
Deleting the UserConfig2.lua file worked for me, the game then prompted me for the serial number which I found in My Account after clicking on the Tropico 3 "Box Shot"

I have the same problem and this seems to be the best solution. Although I really have a hard time finding where is located the UserConfig2.lua file to delete it.
I can't even find a «documents and settings» directory... So if someone can write me a small guide on where to go and click it would be much appreciated.

Thank you for any help!
