So in short:
The game has no meaning at all? Thank goodness, it really felt like I was missing something very important.

First I thought, that the parents of Leah were all dead and that she lived in this big mansion all by herself.
Then I thought, it was all a dream because of the fire and this was a clue how everyone but Leah died. (I mean, the mansion is burning and all she does is going to bed?)
Then we heard about birdie and I thought it was some kind of bomber and Leah was either a scientist or a spy.
Those weird phone calls.
And in the end.. birdie was a bird...

I really didn't get that game and on the same hand, it scared me. Because I had no clue what was going on.

It could've had some intended meaning, but they refuse to say and leave it up to theory crafting. I like my really straightforward take on it.
There was a minimal amount in the way of gameplay and then the "story" was all over the place. When I started it, I thought there may be connections between events or any of the players actions that would slowly explain what was going on but at the end the entire thing was a big WTF...

As for it being open to interpretation. That should be used when you want your audience to decide what it means to them/how they want it to end/what the theme was. It should not be used when nobody has a clue what is going on, there still needs to be something holding it all together.
Leah looks like a young girl waking up in a bed surrounded by toys. Though the title suggests this isn't true and the emails hint that she's much older given that she was responsible for stopping something before it reaches Europe and had a deal with someone concerning this.

The mansion has no door to the outside. I think everything takes place in the characters mind.

The globe is made of bronze and has a strange odor. This reminds me of another bronze sphere that smells slightly of rotten custard. Planescape: Torment reference. Does Leah have amnesia?

The phone call tells Leah to drink plenty of water. Watering the plant triggers the passage of time. The passage of times allows you to flip the switch which starts a fire. When the fire starts Leah goes back to bed. I think the fire is a fever. Thus the drinking fluids and bed rest.

The map and portraits in the mansion disappear. Is it the end of the world?

When "birdie" arrives Leah doesn't just shoot at it from the roof. Instead she lets it take her. After the gunshot "birdie" is still flying but Leah is gone. Was it suicide?

Explanation:
I think "birdie" is a codename for an infectious agent. Leah is probably a researcher that has developed a vaccine against "birdie" and has plans to profit from it after another personally spreads the disease. "A bird landed on water today" indicates that a water supply was contaminated. "It flew away" tells how quickly it spread. Leah was suppose to stop "birdie" by releasing the vaccine but then "Oh, it's too late". "birdie" was too fast and "flew" over Europe. There's no one left to save. Consumed with guilt Leah infects herself, succumbs to her fever, and slips into a coma to eventually die. Letting "birdie" take her away.

Though that doesn't explain how "birdie" lies to her or the meaning of the note with different times on it.

that probably was the best interpretation of this little game that I have read. I thought along those same threads tho at the ending in my mind she shot the bird (represents sanctuary, escape, flight) and was released from this made up world in her mind.. ie.. awoke to reality to face the trauma that put her there.

all in all a little gem of a game, immersive and worth a good half hour of play. am looking forward to the full game when he releases it.
