I recenlty bought Witcher 3 so now it on the 1.31 patch. I played for an hour and then colsed the game. Later when i came back to play again i would not open. Same thing the day after, it will not open. No notifications or something that shoes what is going wrong.
I am playing in on Windows 7 with the GTX 550 Ti.
If anyone can offer help it would be very much appreciated.
So you are still able to open GOG. Try out the check and repair option. My UI is german but I guess it should be in the same place on the englisch version (picture).

I was having this same problem on windows 10.........
I found my internet security was blocking Witcher 3 and this was stopping it from starting.
So I added an exception for the exe and now it starts every time.

Dukmiester2: First day of game release, my game would work, but would freeze the image with sound still going on in background after anywhere from 5 to 20 minutes of play, had to force quit the game using task manager. Next day, game would NOT even launch.

It would flash up on the screen for a second, then there was an icon in the taskbar for witcher 3, like it was minimized, I click it, came up for 1 second, then minimized again. Again, had to force quit through task manager.

Tried rolling back Nvidia drivers, and still no dice.

I deleted 2 files:

user.settings
user.settings.bak

located here:

C:\Users\MY WINDOWS ACCOUNT NAME\Documents\The Witcher 3

And BAM, now the game loads, but I had to re-do all my settings. I put everything back, including Full Screen Mode in the graphics options. Quit the game, then tried to re-launch.

Same problem, all over again. Icon in the taskbar like it's minimized, and clicking it just pops it up for one second, then minimized again, can NOT play it.

Again,
I deleted 2 files:

user.settings
user.settings.bak

located here:

C:\Users\MY WINDOWS ACCOUNT NAME\Documents\The Witcher 3

And the game works again, and I re-did all my settings except one:

I left it set to Borderless INSTEAD of changing it to Full Screen in the graphics options.

Played COMPLETELY Crash/Freeze free for over 2 hours last night, and it still works just fine today.

Maybe that will help,
worth a try.

battlepigeon: Cheers, buddy! Deleting the user.settings files fixed the issue on my part atleast :)
This was my exact problem I was having with The Witcher 3: GOTY Edition and this fixed it perfectly!

I also had this issue using comodo firewall custom rulesets. However, I did allow the game exe to run, but unplugged the ethernet cable and found that the game ran like this.. I was comforted to know it wasn't verifying the exe / content which means it wasn't a form of DRM and most likely just the game code using a loopback or some local .net thing, which is cool. However, it was disconcerting. Thank you for your post as it was inspiration for me to try this instead of continuing for a refund or disowning GOG. Still, i'm not sure what all the gog / galaxy files are doing in the game data. I trust it's only for if you use galaxy, which i did have installed before the game issues.

Happy Gaming

So how did you change the windows 10 settings?
I'm having the same issue on Windows 10 Home, Version 1607.

I was able to play after installing it for the first time, but today I came back to it, GOG Galaxy did an update of itself and afterwards it won't run.

Task manager has the CPU hovering around 15%, network usage spikes to around 100 Mbps, effectively killing everything else and RAM just keeps climbing and climbing.

I've deleted the user.settings and user.settings.bak files, nothing happened, I've added an exception to the firewall, nothing happened, I'm now verifying the installation, but GOG Galaxy isn't showing any progress on that, even though task manager is showing 80-150 MB/s disk activity for it.

What do?

EDIT: verifying the installation fixed this, but I have a feeling it'll be back.

The same, after 45h solid gaming, it now refuses to start.
After the GoG Galaxy update.
Didn't help that I deleted the user preferences or the installation verification...
I have the same issue... The game won't start after the gog update.

I verified the game two times and didn't help. Also the process is running in the task manager and upload something (tons of gigs) at full speed.

Same problem here, Witcher 3 (goty) is running in background, no visual window and uploads traffic at max speed while increasing the ram size.
What worked for me was simply running the Witcher 3 (non-GOTY) .exe file, and not running it through gog galaxy. 100% success rate doing it this way so far.

the witcher3.exe file is located in the

(GoG folder)\The Witcher 3 Wild Hunt\bin\x64

I just created a shortcut to the witcher3.exe file and put it on the desktop. So far, so good.

Yep, it did the trick with my GOTY edition too.
not working for me either, says its running but nothing happens

Have you terminated the existing task of Witcher in task manager, before trying to run the exe?
... I wanted to reinstall gog and did uninstall Witcher by mistake *sad face* Downloading 34gb anew...

Hi,

For everyone for whom The Witcher 3 fails to launch with Galaxy, and runs fine without it after 1.2.7 Galaxy update, please fill a bug report following "BUG REPORTING" instructions here:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/gog_galaxy_official_discussion_thread/post1

Basically, we need your logs... :)
This will help us detecting what is the issue.

Thank you for your help!

edit: to workaround the issue, you can start TW3 directly from the game executable. Galaxy is optional, so you can run your games without it. :)

edit 2: Could you also try to disable Overlay in GOG Galaxy Settings? (top-left menu -> settings) and then trying to run TW3?
