Arizona-Willie: I too hated this game, at first.

But, as some have said, there are quests that require you to play.

Granted, one could bypass those quests ... but why?

I went on a two day campaign to get as many cards as I could and found a site that listed all the Qwent cards and printed them out and scratched them off as they were acquired.

Still have many to go because you can't just buy them but have to win them as random prizes for winning games.

Almost every game I win I pick up a card.

Getting better at it now.

I never was a card player. Poker yeah but never understood ( or tried to ) bridge and those other complicated games.

I still don't understand those symbols on some cards and what they do. Some cards have hearts and some have crosses and some have skulls etc. etc.

But just set the bet for 1 gold and everyone will play you and it won't cost you much to play and learn.

I'm definitely getting better and better.
Right click on the card and it'll tell you what it does. The skull for example means it has a destruction ability. Scorch will destroy the most powerful unit(s) on the board regardless of row or whose side they belong to. Handy if you don't have any powerful units on the table. The golden dragon dude with the really long name will destroy the strongest unit(s) in the enemy's first row.
I felt the same way at first.

But, if you play a NPC a game or three they will lose and you will, usually, win a card.

Once you get more cards winning becomes MUCH easier.

Northern Realms is the only faction / suite you have enough cards to play with at first, I believe.

I'm enjoying the Gwent game ( where did they get that name? ) much more now and look forward to winning more cards. I try to play a merchant every time I interact with them now.

And, hey, oldgrey, I'm 73 and still going strong and playing video games every day and if < I > can learn I bet you can too.

oldgrey: I'm glad it's not just me that hates this card game :)
I've tried to play this card game
Tried watching some How to vids but still just don't get it

So now I've just given up on it & enjoying this epic game without it
Glad to read I can get though the game without playing it
Although Gwent is a very simplistic game (once you understand the rules and basic strategies), it's definitely my favorite mini-game I've played in any game.
I see no problem with this mini game as it's quite easy and fun time waster. I wish CD Project would release it as a separate app for tablets.
I hate gwent too. I miss my drinking games.. arm wrestling and my dice game. I don't like card games. Few Quest in witcher 3 I felt that I was forced to play.. Didn't like it. since I didn't have the good cards to save that gambler. Sucked to be him..

Arizona-Willie: I'm enjoying the Gwent game ( where did they get that name? )
I've always wondered... When I first heard that they were adding a card game, I thought maybe they'd try to base it off of 'barrel' or 'screwed' (depending on your translation), the card game from Baptism of Fire that the dwarves liked to play. Safe to say they did not go that route. New card game, new name, that makes sense, but where'd the name 'Gwent' come from?

I want to say I saw a video ages ago of the Reds using it as an acronym, but I can't remember it and I can't find that vid anywhere for the life of me. Maybe I'm mistaken..

Anyway, I like Gwent despite how modern it feels for this game's setting. I can't really imagine how CDPR would have made a card game based off of what you can read on 'barrel' in Baptism of Fire anyway, and I like how they based it on a battlefield, the different factions, etc. I really do miss Dice Poker, though.

In Polish, the name is "gwint" (gveent, with "g" as first letter of "gorgeous"), which means "thread", the one you screw a bottle cap onto or a nut on a bolt. So, it's a bit like "screwed". I don't remember if ethymology of that name was explained in the books. Probably not, because it is only mentioned, without detailed description of rules or anything.

That's cool, so it is kind of named after the same game! I'd have never realized. Thanks man!

I just remember thinking it was a 2v2 (maybe wrong) and reading the dwarves mention use of spades, diamonds, knaves, ladies, something like that. Too vague to really make out rules or anything, but enough to know CDPR decided to do something different. I still think it's cool they added it to Wild Hunt.
Oldgrey, did you get through your first game yet?

What he said :)

Also, book version of Gwint/Gwent is in fact kind of wacky Bridge. Sapkowski was (is?) an avid Bridge player.

When you pressed the H key & went into your cards, did you have enough Northern Realm unit cards?

When you press H (not during a gwent game) do you have any Northern Realm cards on the left hand side?
