I bought this game with the understanding it was DRM free. After I installed the GOG version, when I looked in The Witcher's "System" folder I clearly see Tagès DRM installed here. I have located 2 Tagès files: TagesClient.exe and tagesclient.dat. Here is the screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/vqZWLeJ.png

If this game is "DRM free," why are these files here? Why didn't the GOG Installer install a DRM-free version of The Witcher? Is there a way to remove these files and still play the game?

As far as I know patch 1.5 removes the Tages copy protection system. Check out this page of the witcher wiki for advice on tages removal (just Ctrl+F and type "tages"): http://witcher.wikia.com/wiki/Technical_information
That's just it. I checked the version GOG installs and it is indeed v1.5. What I don't understand is why these 2 Tagès files remain in the game's System folder. It must be a bug with the GOG installer.

Just now I tried deleting those 2 files and it looks like the game will still load. That must mean the GOG installer is installing unnecessary files. Here is another post with a GOG user confirming the two Tagès files in Witcher 1:

Will this problem be corrected in a future GOG version of Witcher 1?

This is irrelevant. You can install the game as many times as you please, no key input, activation or disk in drive required to play. In other words you are not restricted in any way to install or play it. And that's what DRM free means.

The presence of DRM scheme files does not mean that the DRM scheme is active. The TAGES files are inert, doing nothing at all. The game is DRM Free here on GOG.com so you don't need to worry. :)

Do you actually go looking through your game folders for these things? Is that a form of paranoia or something?

IronArcturus:
But maybe it's not a bug, the DRM can be deactivated and maybe the executable or some library needs the files to be present by some weird reference line in code or something, or maybe it's just pure laziness, who knows and I don't even care, if you're so paranoid, just scan your network with wireshark and stop making big words and accusaations without researching stuff by yourself

That is good that the DRM is inert!
I was looking through my copy and i noticed it as well.Even if its inert, why wasnt it removed etc?. people might get wrong impression if they dont see this thread...

I don't have any Tages files in my install, I installed it in january of 2013 for the first time, so I guess the installer offered then was Tages DRM free.

I'm guessing that's the case anyway, but I can't find hide nor hair of any Tages DRM in the Witcher install on my machine.

Really? ...not in Witcher EE DC\System\ ?
Just checked and I have the files, and I re-installed the game only a month ago, so I guess the files are still present in the installer package. I assume they do nothing, but it's a little uncomfortable to see them there, I must admit.
I agree. Normally what I'll do is pack a backup copy of known protection scheme files and try deleting them, just to see if the game runs without it. Sometimes it works, other times it complains. Far as the Witcher goes, it doesn't seem to have any problems running without the Tages executable and datfile.

The worst is Steam, games will always bitch if those stupid Steam files aren't where it expects them even if the game itself doesn't actually require that virus to run.
