It seems that you're using an outdated browser. Some things may not work as they should (or don't work at all).
We suggest you upgrade newer and better browser like: Chrome, Firefox, Internet Explorer or Opera

I bought The Longest Journey from GOG but am skeptical that it will play at all. I am running as Administrator as I saw suggested. When I begin the game, the Game Page comes up. I click on Game Settings, move the mouse a very small amount, and it completely freezes. Nothing seems to unfreeze it, and I have to get out of the game. Any suggestions? Is this game actually playable on a modern computer? I'm running Windows 10, 64 bit. Thanks.

On Windows 10 x64 I don't get this issue, running TLJ directly from the GOG shortcut ("Launch The Longest Journey"), which is in the folder where the game gets installed. It could be something related to your particular hardware configuration or a conflict with some software running in the background.

However, you could try adding the game to ScummVM (2.5 release or, even better, a recent development version 2.6.0git build), and launching it that way. ScummVM, since its merge with ResidualVM a couple of years ago, also supports the High Definition mod for The Longest Journey so you could try that too.

Thank you very much for trying to help me solve my problem. The mouse still freezes when I use "Launch The Longest Journey," so that is not the answer. As far as the cause being my hardware configuration or software running in the background, all I can say is I have played several other games I bought from GOG and never had any problems before. And as you probably know, it is now literally impossible to get in touch with GOG Customer Support (or tell me if I'm wrong on that one).

I'm happy to give this one last shot using ScummVM, which effort I see you're a part of. I can follow instructions very well, but my technical knowledge and technical vocabulary are no longer very deep. Can you give me possibly give me very simple and straightforward instructions as to how try to use ScummVM to run the copy of TLJ I bought from GOG?

Thanks,
Harry

Sure.
1. Download a version of ScummVM for your Operating System.
1a. For Windows 10 x64 and from this link: https://buildbot.scummvm.org/#/dailybuilds it should be one from the row "Windows (64 bits)", and the first or second column. I would suggest the first column (development version) "ScummVM latest
Branch master".
1b. Unzip the file you downloaded (eg. "windows-x86-master-71f8e122.zip") in a folder (eg. C:\scummvm), and open that folder (and probably the folder inside it) until you find a list of files that contain a "scummvm.exe". Run "scummvm.exe"
2. If everything is ok, you will see the ScummVM launcher window.
2a. Click on the "Add Game..." button and it should open an file browsing window.
2b. Navigate to the folder where GOG installed your The Longer Journey game (eg. D:\Games\The Longest Journey) and press "Choose". (Don't worry if the ScummVM file browser does not show the contents of your game folder, this is normal; just press Choose once you've navigated inside your game folder.
3. At this point ScummVM should detect the game and present a dialogue Window with a few tabs. Just press OK there to accept the default settings, which should be fine.
4. Finally you'll be back in the ScummVM launcher window, but now you should see a line for The Longest Journey game you just added. It should read something like "The Longest Journey GOG/Windows/English".
4a. Click to select that line entry and then click on the "Start" button, or alternatively just double click on the line entry for TLJ.

This should be enough to start the game properly.

Let me know if you'd prefer to write instructions on how to use the last stable 2.5.0 ScummVM version, instead of the development 2.6.0git. I'm recommending the development version, because it should include extra bug fixes since the release of 2.5.0.
Also let me know if you have trouble in any of the above steps.

Here's a link to the ScummVM documentation for adding and playing a game:
https://docs.scummvm.org/en/latest/use_scummvm/add_play_games.html

Setting up the HD mod requires a few extra steps (documented in the HD mods official page that I've linked above; note that those mention ResidualVM, but these days it's recommended to use ScummVM, since the projects were merged).
I'd suggest that you first setup and run the game as is, before attempting to set up the HD mod (which is an optional thing to do).

Thank you so much! I followed your clear instructions, and now the game seems to be working fine. No trouble at all with the mouse (so far (-:)
