Cusith: I meant that someone put the game in a zip randomly while trying to fix the problem then that person quit and all subsequent uses of the zip was just them doing what the last person did
It would mean the new person is not competent for that job.

Really the game industry is filled with stuff held together with chewing gum that no one touches for fear of upsetting the gremlins I think its well worked into the work culture in many of these places even if it makes no sense you don't change anything.

Aikahu: I wonder if they mean to fix it. The bad version is still up.
avatar
shmerl: Can you contact support about it please? This is getting completely unprofessional on GOG's part.
I tried, but the contact page didn't work for me :-( Some error contacting reCaptcha and then I couldn't proceed.

Oh and you are right, 3 bad uploads in a row smells of incompetence. I can forgive mistakes, we are all human, but 3 times in a row???

"getting..." ... "smells of" ... :D

while I'm taking a bath in full pool of GOG's incompetence twice a day... You are so nice guys. :) Me not.
Has someone reported this via the support button? I tried, but it wasn't working for me.

Submitted it.
I contacted GOG support, and apparently they weren't even aware, that the installer is broken...

Conclusion:

1. First of all, the provided zip file is corrupted and unusable. It's likely simply truncated from the intended one.

2. Secondly, there is no need to create such zip file to begin with, why not ship the .sh one itself like for all other games? It's already compressed.

3. Looks like there was no QA done, and your packaging team didn't even test the result, since it's trivial to determine that it's broken by simply trying to decompress and run the installer.

Thanks shmerl! Amazing they weren't even aware.

The bad one is still up as of this post... come on, GOG!

My conclusions from all this:

1. GOG probably cut their support team to some contractors or people who have little clue what they are doing.
2. They aren't really following forums for such bug reports.

Or (3) they secretly want to push their customers to Steam.
Let me know when the installer is working... I have about 10h in the game, and the changelog seems reasonable...

Thank you. :)

edit: ... so I put another like 30min into it, and got to the point where I get crash to desktop every time I try to use certain entry (near the old guild, with the deer statue next to it) to Skara Brae (I'm not stuck, technically I have many other options to follow, maybe the game even expects me to report to Rabbie first before another entry to Skara Brae...)
(checking the patch notes, nothing seems relevant to this one, but I will wait for new patch, or if it will get fixed as I will progress with other quests) ... except this crash, the game seems reasonably solid. Maybe leaking memory over time a bit, but 16G memory is enough for the couple of hours sessions I can afford at most, would be probably PITA for 8+h session.. but maybe it's just caching things over time and would eventually stop growing.

That thought occurred to me too, but that would be a seriously nasty thing to do, so I assume it's incompetence here, not malice.
Hi everyone, Thanks for sharing your experience that you are having with this. I have passed these details on to our team. In the mean time if you do encounter any other issues please do feel free to reach out to our dedicated support team to see if they're able to lend a helping hand with this. As they will be able to escalate this when needed. inxile.zendesk.com/hc/en-us
"As they will be able to escalate this when needed"

One thing InXile can do is pressure GOG to fix it. It's 3 days now that the broken one has been up and they still haven't bothered to upload a working one. GOG's been notified, but nothing has happened so far.
