Hopefully GOG will have the update out by time Steam does.

Undetermined. By the end of the year.
uh ok, so no reason to wait with trying the game then
Looks like there is going to be more updating of the various sprites in the game. In case you don't know or are new to the game since 1.2 the new art guys have been redoing many of the sprites and art in the game.

This time the NPCs are getting the touch up treatment

So the sprites look like Final Fantasy VI now instead of Final Fantasy V :P I wish they would overhaul the crafting interface, it's pretty crude right now,. I wish I could filter through various kinds of items (bricks, walls, equipment, ...) and show all the craft I had learned even if I don't have the materials right now (they could b faded out or grey in that case)

For the first part, try clicking on the small hammer above the material list in the crafting section.

For the second part, take an item with the Material tag to the Guide and show it to him (under the Crafting section). It's not as much that you learn recipes, all of them are technically available to a new character, you just need the right materials and workplace. Also, there are so many recipes in the game (around 90 that involve [basic] Wood) that it would be a nightmare to display them all at the same time ingame. The wiki is a far more useful place for this, even though it can spoil the surprise of discovering certain new types of items.
I know about the small window, but what I'm really looking for is a way to filter crafts. Currently if I open the window I get dozens of small icons all in my face.
3000 items

It's nuts but awesome. I can't wait to try out Expert Mode right from the beginning as well.

to be fair it's not 3,000 items in the update though given how much of a work-a-holic Redigit is when working(he usually puts in 32 hour days working on the updates) it wouldn't shock me if he didn't put that many new items in a update. But yeah it's still sounds like a whole lot of new stuff is being added since 1.2 they brought the total item count to 1,000 or more and not sure how much was added in 1.2.2 and 1.2.4.
Hehe, yeah it's probably more to attract new customers and old timers but it will be a lot of new stuff, that's the point. :)

Well I don't think they need that much help attracting new customers the game still seems to be selling well, it even was doing good during that span of time when Redigit stopped updating after 1.1 and before he announced he came back to roll out 1.2. If anything if there is a business minded reason for continuing updating the game it would be more for keeping the fan base happy/keeping good will till Terraria 2 is finished.

Something Chuckle Fish should of taken note off given how badly they pissed off people with the whole mess that is Starbound
Speaking of Terraria 2, I wonder what they plan to actually add in that game. I'm likely going to get it at release but only to see how it is and support the creators but then wait probably a year or two before playing just like I did with Terraria, I never tried it prior to 1.1.
