voodoo47: edit controls.cfg. also, for those who are crashing, try;

- run in winXP compatibility mode
- FullScreen=Yes (edit sshock.ini)
- SoftRenderer=On (edit sshock.ini)
- VideoMode=3 (edit sshock.ini)
- Joystick=Off (edit sshock.ini)

also, post the error message, if any.

Glowhyena: Still crashed. :(
Same

Error message is just the generic "System Shock stopped working"
Since I did not get this to work on my Win7 x64 rig, I tried my old XP machine and had no problems. One thing I did observe is that the tell-tale "double pop" in the speakers to tell you that Sound Blaster initialized properly was present in XP, but not in Win7. I cannot help but wonder if the emulation in the Enhanced Edition is causing the crash with failed or unstable initialization. It would explain why some people have crashes while others have gameplay, but no sound.

I also have a crash, sometime between the Intro and when I skip the Intro it crashes depending on how fast I click so it will crash always around the same time BUT always somewhere else depending on if I skipped something or not. So at the fastest I can skip everything till new Game and then it crashes without a specific error message.

I have sound and also tried the above .ini changes with Fullscreen, Windowed Mode, Joystick Off, etc.

As I use the current Windows 10 Insider Version I don't think I will get much help but as others experience this issue too it's not the Insider Build this time at least :)

System Shock Classic Edition works perfectly.
go to \res\sound and rename the genmidi folder into somethign else, that will get the music out of the way. see whether this improves things.

Not solved. But thanks for trying to fix the crash. :3
ok, try getting all the audio out of the way, rename the entire sound folder.
Let me join the crash crew. I managed to get a bit of game time in windowed mode somehow, but nothing I've tried (or what has been suggested here; I've tried every single thing suggested by voodoo47) seems to work.

I'm running Windows 7 on an i5-4440 with 8GB RAM and a Radeon R9 270.
any crash logs/dumps in the game folder (crashdump.txt and shockdump.dmp) you could post? does the error message after the crash say anything? try getting the following crash info from the event viewer: , [url=http://www.digitalmastersmag.com/magazine/2012/08/tip-of-the-day-how-to-find-crash-logs-on-windows-8/]win8+

text export from dxdiag would also be helpful (save all information, upload somewhere like http://pastebin.com/ and post the link - you probably will have to remove http://www for the forum software to allow the link).

anyone else who is crashing is advised to do the same.

No such luck. The message is just a generic "System Shock has stopped working". I did manage to find this from the Windows Event Viewer though, if it's any help:

Faulting application name: sshock.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x55ff5f9c
Faulting module name: sshock.exe, version: 1.0.0.0, time stamp: 0x55ff5f9c

try getting that dxdiag text export as well. same for everyone else, your cooperation is a requirement, can't fix stuff without all that info.

Right. Just to confirm though: the info you need comes from the "save all information" button in DxDiag?
yes. but posting the text directly is probably impractical (file should be quite large), upload it somewhere and post the link.

I can't post links publicly, can I send the link via PM?
delete http://www and you should be able to post the link. will talk to the mods, ask them to allow txt attachments.
dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/88530172/DxDiag.txt

yep, seems to work.

Edit: For what it's worth, my experience is very similar to Mr45's below.
