No. Shotgun hybrids, when killed, will always have a broken shotgun in their inventory.

My mistake, then.....but their bodies DO magically evaporate after a few seconds. How realistic is that? 0.o

A couple more unrealistic aspects of SS2 to ponder:

The Von Braun is a massive spaceship, yet there is only one elevator connecting the first 5 decks(There is a maintenance shaft, but it only connects decks 1 & 2).

The player can walk/run the length of the ship in just a few minutes.

Well, if here are so many skilled players - one little question: If I find repair kits, I can drag them onto weapons to repair them - but they are depleated. Now there is a repair skill? If I get this skill, how can I repair things without the toolkit?

The repair skill allows one to repair their weapons(if one's skill is high enough, that is....each weapon can only be repaired if your repair skill level is high enough) to usable status. To do so, right click a broken/jammed weapon in your inventory and click the repair button to start the repair mini-game. The higher your repair skill, the better chances you'll have of repairing a weapon to usable status.

(Another way to improve your chances of repairing weapons/doing other technical tasks[hacking/etc] is to find & use the software mods/soft mods you find on bodies/in vending machine lists. These can improve your chances of repairing your weapons/successfully completing other technical tasks by a small amount.)

Also, a word of advice: Try to save repair kits for broken weapons that you can't repair yet(due to your repair level being too low), or for weapons which have very slim odds of being successfully repaired at your current repair skill level.

Clarification: Repair skill is used to fix broken/jammed weapons(via the repair button mentioned above). Maintenance skill is used(via the use of a maintenance tool) to improve the quality of a weapon so it won't break as quickly.

Nitpick: repair skill can also be used on broken electronics and such, like vendor machines.
I feel it is better to raise your maintenance skill so you never have to repair weapons. There are usually enough auto-repair kits to handle replicators and the one door lock that I recall being broken. Maintenance skill is important since each point in maintenance means your maintenance tool repair more levels. So if your gun is a 1, and your maintenance skill is 3, when you use your maintenance skill the gun goes to 4. If your maintenance skill was 4 your gun would go to 5 etc. This way you have better weapon and use fewer maintenance tools.

Also important is that all the implants you have (like Brawnboost) will have extra power with higher maintenance. So the implant starts at 100 power, and with each new level of maintenance it will gain 10 power. So it can last longer. It also means your laser pistols holds a bigger charge too.

So if you have to choose between increasing repair or maintenance, choose maintenance if possible.
Is there a way for me to enjoy this game? I was very excited about this game, especially after having a great experience with Deus Ex. However, I'm just not having fun. I have no ammo, pistols break after like 10 shots, I don't have sufficient skill to repair them/fix any weapons. I am in the Cargo Bays fighting against numerous hybrids/maintenance bots/turrets with a wrench. This isn't fun or scary. I just repeatedly die and have been getting from room to room by running/jumping/juking and getting lucky. I literally just died probably 50 times and came here to post about it.

I understand that this is a classic, and a lot of people really love this game, but I feel like this isn't just me. The game has a great atmosphere but the mechanics are absolutely wretched. I've lowered the difficulty setting to easy and it's still punishing and unfun. The game doesn't even offer alternate paths or anything like Deus Ex did to where the player can still advance through levels without engaging in combat. I'm literally bunny hopping around Cargo trying to find whatever key I need to advance. I'm seriously considering stopping playing and just reading the Wikipedia plot summary and chalking this up to my first bad Gog experience.

If you decide to give the game another go, don't rely on guns too much unless you've really invested some points in the repair and maintenance skills and got some maintenance tools handy. As you said, they break easily and ammo is scarce. That's why you shouldn't use them unless you really have to, for example when you're up against bots or want to take out cameras. Stick to the wrench as much as possible from the very start of the game! You can take down hybrids and monkeys in two or three hits once you get in close. Hell, you can even take down the maintenance bots (the yellow ones) with the wrench only, even though the bot's explosion will hurt you. And if you research your (organic) foes, you'll do more damage.

Honestly, though, the first two or three decks you visit are the hardest, since you really need to be careful and use your resources only when they're really needed. SS 2 is one of those games that do get easier over time, as you collect upgrade modules, level up your stats and abilities and get stronger and more capable.
well, resource scarcity and resource management are integral parts of the game, if you hate that, there isn't much that can be done.

but here is a hint, if you are dying a lot, you are probably doing something wrong.
You can edit user.cfg to eliminate enemy re-spawns and slow weapon degradation. From the readme:

Create a notepad document called "user.cfg". All the configuration variables listed in the readme should be added to the user.cfg (unless otherwise noted) exactly as written, each on a line of its own.

Note: Because of the way the user.bnd file generated by the game is formatted, you may encounter problems if you edit this file using Windows Notepad. If you save this file from Notepad, you will have to re-open it and manually add new line feeds between each line. An easier method is to use the DOS Edit program (or other similar text editor programs). DOS Edit can be started from a MS-DOS prompt or by using the Run command from your Windows start menu.

will allow you to use a joystick instead of your keyboard.

Roger Wilco

Frequent Messages

bind F12 "chatsend Run Away!!!"

The following unsupported configuration variables have been added to the single player game:

Monster Spawning
If you've killed everything in a given area, and you wait around long enough, you'll notice that more monsters are spawned to keep you busy. To minimize respawning, use the configuration variable:
no_spawn

System Shock 2's ecologies look at how many monsters are in a given area. If a defined minimum number of monsters are present, there is a chance that a new monster will spawn. The variable:
lower_spawn_min <n>
reduces the defined minimum monster count on all ecologies by <n>.
raise_spawn_rand <n>
lowers the chance of a monster randomly spawning by changing the random chance from 1/i to 1/(i+<n>).

Gun degradation
The config variable:
gun_degrade_rate <n>
is a multiplier for the rate at which your weapons degrade. For example, to completely eliminate weapon degradation & breakage, set the value to 0. To tone it down, set it somewhere between 1 and 0.

Quick-save and Auto-Save overwrite
System Shock 2's quick-save and quick-load system uses the same save-slot as the autosave system. This slot is also used by the regular save/load system. So quick-saved games are often overwritten by other games (for example, whenever you change a level or load a different save game). In order to avoid this problem, you can rebind the quick-save and load keys (alt-S and alt-L) to save to a different save-slot. For example, to save to slot 10 instead, add the following lines to your user.bnd file:

bind s+alt "shk_save_game 10"
bind l+alt "shk_load_game 10"

Using slot 10 to make regular saves will now, of course, over-write your quick-saves, but making level transitions will not.

After I finally finished the game I was pretty baffled by all the talk about enemy respawn. It's really mostly hybrids that respawn, and not that often it seems. Perhaps it's broken or bugged for some people, but it wasn't waves and waves of enemies, it was literally a couple guys here or there in certain areas if you backtracked.

Anyway, that rant off, I agree with what others are saying. The first few levels you should be saving ammo. I did almost exclusively melee until like last few parts, and found the last parts a little boring since I had so much ammo. The cargo bay area actually seemed like 'the hump' to me. I melee'd and ran through it, but I can see people using some ammo up there to get past it. There really are tons of robots, so my guess is the designers didn't want you to feel safe or go slow through that part. It's kinda just 'get your stuff and get out'.

Exploring the cargo bays and going slow there when you first arrive is probably a bad idea. Keep in mind exactly what your purpose is for being there. If you try to examine every nook and cranny and kill every enemy, you'll run out of ammo, health, nanites, and probably a few other things. Best to avoid contact, pay attention to the mini map, and run through them as much as possible until you find what you're looking for. You can come back later for revenge.

REASON FOR EDIT: I used "you're" when I should have used "your." I couldn't let that stand without loathing myself.
