Seriously, I'd have your babies. I was tearing my hair out trying to get the GoG version working with the port. <3
So does the port work without the disks? It was my understanding you needed the CDs for the port.

The port installer from Vexilliums site only needs the disc to get the data files from it when it installs. The actual port executable itself doesn't need the disc. So what Ravey has provided here is a nice zip file that extracts the port files itself, and you just provide the data files from the GOG installation. Ravey, just interested in how you got the port files. Did you install the port from the installer and then copy the resultant files so that they could be copied to any installation of Syndicate Wars? Or did you compile the port yourself to obtain the port files? If it is the latter, might you be able to look into compiling it with the speed .patch from here:

I'll look into it.

Update: Got it compiled on Linux, but I wasn't able to cross-compile it.

Seconded, if you can recompile with the speed patch that would be awesome. At the moment the port is broken and runs way too fast (tested on several different computers, including a slow netbook).

I had a go last night but the compiling instructions were insanely complicated - someone with a good knowledge of C compilation under Windows would have a much easier time of it, I suspect.

Could this be why I am getting my butt kicked all the time, the game is running too fast and my reactions can't keep up? ;)

But seriously, I'm not sure. I've never played Swars before I bought it on GoG, and I have terrible performance without the port so this is my only experience with the game. Is it supposed to run a bit slower? If that is the case perhaps I might be able to plan my missions instead of hectically trying ro respond to mass enemy ambush!

Sure!

Probably, I don't have a problem with it though (from the dozen or so missions I've played.)

Only issue I have is that the port either crashes (without the replacement dll), or runs, but without sound (with the replacement dll). As far as speed and such though, it works exactly as it should.
Maybe it's just me! I am getting better at the game, I still find myself overwhelmed relatively easy but I am not that experienced with the game.

I have personally found the port to be very functional, but I was wondering if there is anything missing in the port that exists in the original game. I know multiplayer isn't working in the port, but multiplayer isn't something I'm interested in. Other than that, is the port basically complete?

It's missing joystick support and the tension music that plays when you're in danger. Other than that, it uses the exact same code as the original, only replacing the bits that were DOS-specific.
Is the Windows port not supposed to have sound? I'm not sure I understand how it works...without the replacement dll, it crashes, but with it, no sound ever plays anywhere.

EDIT: Scratch that, somehow got sound working. Now if I could just make that window bigger...

Not to harp on it too much again but this is a huge issue for me as well. It's either play it stretched out on a 1680x1050 monitor or in a window so small I can't see the map or read the briefings.

Port is amazing and I'm super grateful for it. Just stuck between a rock and hard place trying to use it.

I have played it before and unless I'm having very bad luck (several different computers all with different hardware/configs causing some strange coincidental problem every time) it is definitely running too fast. Games didn't used to run at silky smooth frame rates.

If you read the discussion on the site for the port, the guys who did the port acknowledge this and provide a patch. Unfortunately the patch is in source code and needs to be recompiled, which is quite a task.

So if someone is able to recompile with their patch included, they would give us a properly working version, which would be amazing.
who made the language packs?? i think the german one has an error.. when u get your first mail on the syndicate site it always crashs when the second section of the briefing is writen only happens with the german language pack is installed.. something like that doesnt happen on the churchs site or on later missions on the syndicate site..
